View Full Version : Issues with using a spin reel on an alvey rod?

Hi All,
I know there's a few people out there that fish with threadline reels on low-mount (Alvey) rods.
With the same blank, the low mount effectively increases the working length of the rod, and then one can swap between Alvey and spin reel at will.
I assume the guide placement is likely different, but the biggest difference would appear to be the stripper guide.
What would be the downside of using a threadline with the alvey stripper guide?

(I can understand NOT using an Alvey with a smaller threadline stripper guide)

Cheers!

Hi, the guide spacing will realistically be no different from moving the winch mount 50cm closer to the butt as the guides will still need to carry the line over working part of the blank (unless it has a really slow taper). The practice of using huge stripping guides to suit Alveys is also possibly something that has been done for many years with little foundation behind it. Many years ago, I was fortunate enough to meet and spend some time with Ross Garven ( a noted casting champion) who used FSU4120+ 4foot extensions with big alveys. He approached his casting with a dedicated approach and went as far as having high speed photos taken to help get more distance through rod/runner placement/size etc. Amazingly he found that as long as the bottom guide is at least half way up the rod, you only need a small first guide.....typically only a size 30!!!!!! I have made many of these rods for myself and friends and can assure you the small first guide has no impact on casting distance and I can still punch bait and sinker further (>100m) than any other rod combo I have ever used. Ross of course could make that look pretty tame.
So in a nutshell, using an eggbeater in the low mount is no problem at all.....I used to prefer this for spinning with metals off the rocks however now prefer overheads.
