View Full Version : Sebile Knot and others like it

If you dislike your knots whacking your runners at 100kmh when casting from the shore, then I am guessing the Albright does not cut it when using heavier braid and a leader upwards of 30 lb test.
I have tried a few Albright knots when making a shock leader and they are way too thick for me to seriously consider any other outcome than backlash and even guide ring inserts to be knocked out (50lb braid to 40lb leader), especially when whacking a good size 200 gram bait out there, or a large lure.
I have been checking out the Sebile Knot and it seems the way to go.
Anyone got and good shock leader pointers/tips/knots or anything that might help me?
Also any links, as the net is a good place for info but the Google search often misses good sites.
Cheers

Wind on leaders
try the PR knot or even the mid knot.
Wind on leaders
yeah good, can be a little bulky still and hard to find under 20lb though

Bimini twist than albright. Maybe your tying the albright wrong. It has always been good for me. Try the improved Albright knot including the Bimini twist.

The Albright or improved albright is the problem in any size above 40lb - even when you tie it right. The knot catches the guides and after a dozen or so casts - the lure won't be coming back. The answer I found is the PR knot - thanks to another member for his advice.

I have used the slim beauty last night with some adhesive and it wasn't noticeable when casting.
Is this the same as the PR?
Thanks I will look those knots up.

The FG knot is great, I have tied it a few times, and its awesome. Check it out here http://www.sportfishingmag.com/techniques/tying-improved-fg-knot
The PR knot you will need a bobbin for, although it may be better than other knots when it comes to maintaining the true breaking strain of your line. Just something to think about.
Scalem, MattChew and myself were playing with some knots tonight and we found the FG was the strongest and slimmest, we didn't try a PR knot though.

Hey Tim, I tried it another 3 times since you and Matt left and I got it! Confident enough to tie it on the new braid, then the test was trying to lift the tow coupling of the camper trailer.:o
She's ready for another assault on the cobia!!
Thanks again mate.

Thanks all,
I tried a makeshift PR and it was surprisingly sturdy, I didn't even use a bobbin and managed to fashion a makeshift one by hand and a couple of clamps.
I didn't even have to burn the end and there was no way I could pull it through with my hands.
Might buy a bobbin off eBay so I can make perfect ones.
Will check out the FG too.

I went away from the Albright many years ago. I found the Yucatan knot to be brilliant. It's strong, quick to tie and is quite a slim knot.

Another vote for the PR knot. Bobbins are cheap and I found it really easy to tie. However I wouldn't like to be trying to tie one bobbing around out on the water.

I went from the Albright after losing a few lures and use the double uni now in anything under 60lb leader above that I exclusively use wind ons

My head hurts just looking at those knots. I could not imagine sitting in a small boat trying to tie one when fish are going off around you. I will have a crack at the FG so at least I start the day with a good connection. The other option is to pick up 150m of Jerry Brown Hollow Core in 80lb or 100lb and do a short top shot and then just make it a knotless wind on leader

I got some 60lb Hollow Core in high vis yellow, its very nice stuff, very supple and easy to push a thread needle through (yeah bought some crap overseas).
Though it is thick for the surf, was a toss up if I would put it on, so I put it aside for later and spooled some 50lb braid (which is also thicker than what I am used to).
I mean it is not that thick, I just guess I am waiting to get busted up by something big till I upgrade to the serious stuff.
The 40lb HC is what I was after but it is not available ATM, it would be the same diameter as 50 lb braid.
You mean a connector piece above the shock leader?

No problems tieing the pr knot on the boat.Just use a fly tieing bobbin plastic cotton spool and wrap it 3 times around the arm of the bobbin. This gives just about perfect tension on most size braids .Tied 28 in front of tv one night to come up with this formula.

I have posted this one B4, and it is what I was recommended by Jones Tackle for fishing Hutchies.... After I sulked about losing 5 knife jigs in one session. This one I can tie in no time flat, I need to be able to do this with eyes shut and in offshore conditions when its difficult to stand.... let alone tie a knot. It might take a while to be able to tie an FG while offshore, so this one is 2nd choice.

Scalem,
The knot you are tieing is a tony jones leader knot as shown in Geoff Wilsons book of knots.I used to use this knot jigging ,but it was to bulky in heavy braid also you are tieing 2 knots compared to one pr knot in half the time.
Fishawn you have sparked my interest in knots again as i try every new knot i can find. Looks like back in front of the tv tonight tieing knots again.
