Hi Ken,
I had the same issue with mine after only half a days fishing, the problem was a spring had come loose. I dont have the parts sheet near me and i have forgotten what it was called. But it is near the little oil hole in the bottom left corner if looking at the handle side, side on. I havent had a problem with it since and have caught some decent barra and silver cobblers on it.
Cheers

I just remembered it is called the clutch pawl spring, mine just had to be put back in place. Fiddly work.
I had a similar thing with the 200DPV. Serviced it and it was fixed.

sounds like a logical part to be the problem.
the guy at the tackle place said he put the spring in it out of his reel but that didnt fix so its off to the shimano man apparently.
its a strange thing to be going wrong after the number of years these thumb bar reels have been around.
especially ones of this apparent quality.
thanks guys

I have a Curado 200dhsv and wife has an E7. I serviced both a few weeks ago. I was "surprised" to find the near new E7 had pretty much cardboard drag washers. I replaced those with Jacks Carbontex. NO, and I repeat, NO grease in the E7 at all. Needless to say it has been rectified. My youngest daughter gave me her E7 yesterday, and I'll find the same issues.
Most, if not all reels, need to be fully serviced and drags upgraded straight from the box.
Something in your reel has a bit of crap in it to cause intermittent failures. Learn how to service your own, and you'll be the only one to blame when it fails, but it won't!!!
EDIT: Take plenty of pics as you dismantle, or go to alantani.com, he has a great E7 service post
Shimano's usually need a pre-fish service. Grease must be expensive.
