I have never caught any large Red Emperor but hope to have the opportunity to come across a few in May fishing the Percys and Swains. I'm looking at my heavier gear and think I may be a bit undergunned. I have a TLD 25, 50lb mono on a livefibre 15-24kg and a T curve deep jig 200 with a Torium 16 loaded with 65lb braid. Are these outfits going to cut the mustard or do I need to invest in something heavier.
Any other info as to rigs or other setup would be appreciated
cheers

The tld25 will handle it but they are slow. Can not see why the torium shouldn't be able to handle the average red. Now do ya need a deckie........;D

Not familiar with how good the drag is on the torium (i.e nice and smooth or not) but if its drag is good - then that rig sounds about perfect. might get dusted by the odd bigger fish - but you should be able to deal with most typical reds unless you are fishing really rough country. (i usually use 50lb braid on a deep jig 200 myself and lose more reds to pulled hooks than getting dusted).

You will be OK with that gear Horse, but I think you will spend most of the time with the Torium. I would, after using a Torium 20 on my second trip to the Swains.
Mine was loaded with 50lb braid and on a 30lb class jig stick but caught everything up to a 60lb gold spot cod.
You`ll have a ball!
Oh, and I always use a number 7 suicide hook below a ball sinker running on a 2mt mono trace of 80lb breaking strain.

Neil,
Seano has caught large Reds on all sorts of gear and in fact his last effort was on 20lb mono, I believe and a smallish spin outfit.

Having said that, going where you are, you'll need a bit more grunt as the taxman will be present.
Pop onto PETackle website and have a squizz around.
Then again, Greg uses mono 60lb from memory and slightly heavier leader.
Me.......
7ft wand that has a fast taper..... ( 10 -15 and a 15 -24 , )
usually a Diawa Sealine, because they are unbreakable
60lb low stretch mono
80lb leader and covered in Lumo tube near the hooks
paternoster rig and 400lb swivels
hooks range a bit but usually around the 9/0, but have been using smaller ones that are much stronger. Deep V Reefmaster hooks.
Never use chemically sharpened hooks.................
bait........ whole crushed Hussar, whole side of Mullet
cheers LP

Good advice there Phill. I am stocking up on plenty of Seans Deep V Reefmaster Hooks and will be grabbing a few packs of the PE Tackle flys. I will have to trawl through some of Gregs and Foxy's old posts as well

Neil,
Should have no drama at all with that gear mate.
Speaking of big reds mate of mine who lives in bundy and fishes off round hill rang me last week and said he got his PB red 23kg and will send me a pic soon and I will post it for all to see.
Cheers

80lb braid, 100lb leader, Soft tipped fast action rod and a reel with a lot of smooth high drag.... And if you are fishing any good structure you will still probably loose more than you land... Yeah on flat country you might be right on 65lb or 50lb but why risk it? If they don't get you in the reef you still have to beat the sharks!

Spot82.
G'day mate,
I like to try my luck in getting some. Who would you recommend to go with as in charter, and what's the best time of year to try. Bait wise?
Cheers, Bondy

Totally agree. I use a 50lb and an 80lb outfit. I use the 50 lb in relatively open country like Moffy and we do fine. In some spots though the 80 must come out or the big ones will brick you. I remember fishing with my brothjer in some tough country and he smashed a 12.5 kilo model on his Torsa with 80 lb braid. I hooked it's mate second later but was using only 50 and it dusted me good. I had my Saltiga Espedtion with T curve 400 sitting in the rack and was spewing. Maybe you should consider a 100 lb handline to save bucks on the few occasions you'll need it.
I use Gamakatsu Octopus hooks in 9/0 or 10/0 size. Favourite bait is a fillet of fish (Fusilier followed by Hussar then the rest) with the tail left on. For the 50 lb rig I use Black Magic tough trace in 100 lb for the paternoster and 130 lb for the 80 lb rig.

I use a T16 N Torsa, 50lb braid and 5 meters of 110lb Pink Schneider as a wind on leader. I use a 30cm piece fillet (skin on) of a Spangled Emperor, Moses Perch or Hussar and thread it onto 3 x 9/0 Tru Turns and a 12 Ball sinker straight onto the hooks.
If you think the hooks are rather large, they are however I have still caught plenty of under sized Nannies and the like on them.
I have tried just about every rig known for Reds and this has caught me hundreds of Red Emperor, LMN and big reef Jacks to convince me.
Let us know how you go Horse.
