Hey guys, Just wondering what size auxillary motor you would suggest putting on a 5.1m Half Cabin Savage Pacific. It currently only has a 70hp on the back which is getting a bit old and was just looking for something that would get me out of trouble if i get stranded somewhere. Thanks very much!

If you have concerns about your main motor ... first and foremost....... update it !

I'll probably start an argument here .... but in my opinion unless you are boating in an extreme remote environment then an auxiliary is just a waste of money / burden . It's a throwback from years gone by when outboard motors were unreliable.
During my 15 years of boat ownership - my boat(s) has been towed 4 times ..... 3 because of fuel issues that would have rendered a aux motor useless anyway.
The way I see it - carry your VHF radio & if you breakdown ...... call for a tow or wave someone down.
To answer your question though''
To push a boat like yours effectively (depending on tides and wind ) you'll probably need a 9hp or thereabouts.

Buhfee I totally agree with nagg I had the same problem as you I had a 94 model 70 Johnno on a 5.2 glass half cab with a 03 6 johnno in the time the 6 was on the back it had to get me home 5 times due to the main donk giving me troubles providing I had no wind or tide against me I could do 9 kph wot by gps this would be cut in half if the conditions were against me I stretched my coin and bought a new 90 donk and have since done 350 hours with not a moments trouble sold the 6 johnno and just to be sure in case murphy catches up with me I joined the local vmr for just $60 a year in the case I need a tow now that is bloody cheap insurance in my books cheers guys
