View Full Version : Terez swains
i have been eyeing off a shimano terez 7ft 2, 15 - 30lb rod for throwing and dropping soft plastics, small jigs, big vibes, stick baits etc etc up at swains. Seems like it would fit the bill nicely. I have a 8000 stradic but i think it might be a bit big. Any thoughts?
I also have a t-curve deep jig and talica 16 for the bottom bouncing work so thatside of things is sorted just trying to work out the placcie rod and reel. Am i on the right track? suggestions? I must say that these Terez rods are quite interesting.
Egrell Bear Essentials rod would be ideal. You can fish up to 4oz jigheads and play with knife jigs and big vibes up to 120 grams
cheers tim :)

The outfit I am using for that sort of stuff is a Stradic 8000 on a Fin Nor 15-24kg spin rod. Its the 7' Ahab model. It is light and powerful but its still marginal in bad country. I would look a 7' Gary Howard G Force extreme 15-24 kg for that sort of work or a Terez in the 7'2" 15-24. The 24kg t curves are too heavy but are still an option
yeah ok, thats a little heavier than i thought. My intention was to not to have a ball tearer broom stick of a rod but have a medium outfit to have a little fun, be able to cast stick baits and poppers but still be able to pull MOST fish to the boat. i would accept i wouldnt be able to bring all the fish to the boat. i have a 15-24kg t curve spin and yes it is heavy rod.

I think your Tcurve would not balance with the 8000 Stradic. See if you can find the GH rod or an Ahab to compare. 15kg is getting pretty light to be throwing stickbaits and poppers at the reef edges. If you want to play with the 15kg stuff I use a 5000 sized reel for that
Do people really like the terez ? - I could have sworn that the blank is based on a strike back lure retriever ;)
They should have sent over the other pretty colours - rather than the white & silver ones :P

I agree on the looks. I would be grabbing one from the States in red rather than white. I'm not sure what I think of them after a play in the shop. The ergonomics and feel to the blank were a bit strange

I'm glad I'm not the only one .......... A mate bought one and I wasn't sure what to make of it . Then I had a better look when I was after a jig stick (heavier spin rod) and that's when I got the feel of a stiff solid blank (very retro ...... Killwell 1980's game blanks) with a weird grip set up . pretty heavy too. As for the white & Silver :-? where did that come from ? Oh well I'm sure someone else will like them -

PS - It would probably be a good rod to use at a place like swains ...... The blank could probably take a beating in the dories

you dont like nothing in white do ya Nagg. :-)
strange you thought it was stiff and heavy. they are actually made longer and lighter than normal australian blanks - well thats the spin anyway.
I'm still trying to get my head around shimanos colours. I didnt like it at first but its not too bad now. i liked the terez rods it when i checked it out, had just enough tip to cast (in the 30lb)but not too much and loaded up very nicely. butt could be 2 inches shorter though.
Horse - i have 18000 spheros for my 15-24 t-curve spin. I'm not planning on taking it this time as its a broom stick. The 8000 stradic is for a lighter set up which i hope to match with the soft plastics set up.
Saw this thread too - http://www.ausfish.com.au/vforum/showthread.php?165447-swains-reef-soft-plastics-setup.&highlight=soft+plastics+swains which is in more in line with my intention.
Cheers

I actually do like white ...... just not in fishing rods ( or reels) - give me black or blue , gunmetal anyday.
As for weight ........ I was going from Saltigas to Terez - so there was un unfair bias & a doubling of the price ......... non the less very noticable .
I still couldn't work out where each rod fitted into the scheme of things (except for the 7'8" popping rods) ...... The US range is certainly better .
Aside from the white , thin grips & dicky butt configuration - I have concerns about running heavy braids under big loads over just alconite guides - even the T Curves run SiC guides.
But as I said ....... they would probably be a robust rod to use out of a dory .
Still reckon the coloured ones look better

Hi Si, I bought the same Stradic/Terez combo your looking at about a month ago. I haven't had a chance to use it on any trout or RTE yet but have landed a couple of good sized fish with it (a kingy and a catfish both around 90-100cm).
It seemed to handle both fish well athough I was only using 20lb leader so had the drag backed right off. I'm hoping to get up to 1770 in a couple of weeks to try it out on some reefies.
The new k-series guides do help stop the line wrapping around the tip when flicking pastics compared to the oder style fuji guides on my other rods. We spent about an hr casting slugs and vibes at the shipping channel markers the other day and found it is a great rod for casting also.

P.S. the white Terez matched up with the pearl white Stradic 8000FJ does look pretty good IMO.

I think the terez rods have a medium taper? This could be your undoing at Swains if fishing shallow water out of a dory. Deeper water OK but shallow water no. Trout in particular will take you back into their hidey hole in a flash so you need to be able to yank them out quickly! To me the perfect rod would be rated to 15kg, 7 foot, fast taper and light in the tip so you can get a good cast. This is based on my experience anyway.

I have this one TZS69MPW. It feels good to use. matched to a capricorn 4500 spooled with 10kg braid. Had school shark to 20kg no trouble

Its a medium power fast action rod. Plenty of strength in the rod to lift with
well you blokes put me off the terez a bit. still a nice rod, egrell bear looked the goods too but decided to get what i really wanted and ordered a gary howard built north fork composite 14-30lb bruiser. not too light at all, thick in the bottom neck for serious pressure and just enough tip for it not to be a broom stick and be able to cast 1/2 to 3oz lure weights. perfect imo. very nice rod. cheers guys. appreciate the input.
