Hi guys
just a couple of questions about reels
i have a couple fo stradic ci4's 2500 that i purchased from USA at different times. the older reel is starting to make a scratching sound (i suppose is the best description) and im thinking it needs something fixing - roller bearing or bearings inside
1. the tackle shop mentioned that to service a reel might not be possible because the internal on a usa version stradic would be imperial and the internals on a aussie version would be metric. would this be the case?
2. if imperial and metric is not an issue - can i get kits that replace certain bits inside? ie bearing kit? and can i walk in or order? and is there a rlough price estimate?
Cheers
ryan
I've pulled my ci4 2500 apart a few time's and it's pretty easy.
The reason I pulled it apart was I found a ton of play in my handle so once I had the sides plate of I noticed the bearings where very loose in their housings on each side.
I got some aluminium foil and wrapped it around the bearing then fit them back into the housing.
I did this about a year ago and it's still running at about 90% better then when I got it.
I really don't believe that the bearing's would be metric here and imperial in the usa and that's because they are all made in the same country and then shipped out to aus or usa or where ever else they are sold.
The only reel that might be different is the rarenium which is a CI4 with much closer tolerances and you can feel the superior quality to our ci4 as soon as you turn the handle.
The Rarenium is made in Japan not like the ci4 which is made in Malaysia.
But to answer your question about the bearings I would take the reel apart and take the bearings to a bearing shop and get better quality bearings at a better price.

Ryan,
I pulled my CI4 stradic apart and replaced bearings with Boca`s. Mainly just to see what difference it made. All the reels for us and aus market are made in the same place, and my American bought stradic took Metric bearings.

Ben

Thanks guys for your responses - it was enough to get me to pull the reel apart and find the bearing and go to the bearing shop and buy a replacement. They just measured it up on their vernier calipers and found one that suited. fixed and awesome - just like brnad new!!!!!

Hi Ryan,
Which bearing shop did you buy your bearing from? Did the original bearing fail because it was dry or did salt water get into it?
I have a few Stradic FI's which share the same internals as the CI4's and it would be good to know where to get replacement bearings if one should fail over time.

hi peter
it was actually the roller bearing - yer i must have got a little salt water in it because the bearing once i had got it out was a little rusty. The bearing place i found that helped me out was BSC at virginia (i think just near the nundah train station) link below - oh and they were $11 each - not sure if thats cheap or dear but certainly easier than taking it to the tackle shop
yer definately get onto it cause it makes it awesome to not have stuffed bearings!!!

Thanks for the info Ryan. I'll file that away for future refernce.
It might pay you to buy a Daiwa needle oiler from K Mart fishing section and you can put a drop of very thin oil directly into that roller bearing to keep it lubricated and also to act as a barrier to salt water entry.
Another alternative is Singer sewing machine oil available from most supermarkets which is also very good for small bearings in reels.

Peter
