X Rap Question

Just wondering if anyone knows why the front treble hook on X Raps always wears into the body when you troll them.Does the treble eventually wear right through the body and cause the lure to be useless ?

Yes it can. Not many survive that long though. On a couple of long cruising trips I have had X raps start to leak from the gouge. If you can get the water out a bit of epoxy bog will fix it for a while.

Yeah i was thinking that a bit of epoxy could fill the gouge when it starts getting deep or fully wears through, i don't need to worry to much though i have about 19 of them.


Is it just the drag of the water against the treble that makes the treble point rub up and down the body of the lure ?

your too right Horse, and thats if the ar$e end trebble doesn't rip out of the body first...even on smaller fish. But, they are still a good lure to catch fish. Just not made too well.

Tim, yep that has happened. I found it was worse with the big suspending jointed xraps..the body would fill up with water and pretty much wreck them!

you could try putting an extra split ring on might make a new gouge a cm away from the first. or try a diff hook size. wahoo and sharks have always worn mine out first

Sounds like it's a common problem then, hopefully most of mine get stuffed up from big fish rather than the treble wearing through the body.

All lures that travel through the water fairly horizontal when trolled suffer from this problem.
If you are going to troll them a lot try swapping the front treble and the rear for that matter for a big single or an assist hook

Yer its a love hate relation ship with the Xraps ive got a draw full you have to have spares the plastic bodies are poor quality and the tail section in the smaller 6s and 8s are to thin with no meat there to hold the split ring keeper,for the money you pay for them you would expect a longer lasting lure but have not had the problem of the trebble wearing a grove to leak yet but have cracked a few on the electric motor head and rocks on the edge of the bank but they work and for the price ive bought them for i can live with the problems.

I've had the same problem with Halco Laser Pro's, with both the stock trebles and Owner ST-66's. My mate Spencer has one 160 DD that started filling up with water after a couple of mackerel trolling trips. We trolled today off the Gold Coast for two or three hours for nothing and the Halco's I was trolling have very much smaller marks on their sides than previously, possibly because I've changed the hooks on these new Halco's to Owner ST-41BC 2X - I read an article by David Green of Fishing World Magazine and Queensland Fishing Monthly, where he said the curved points of these hooks reduce the possibility of hooking the body of the mackerel when it hits the lure. Judging by his photos, they are strong enough for big mackerel and wahoo.

The Decoy T-S21 treble hooks (photo below) might be the answer to the problem though, with the added benefit of much better hook exposure. I don't know if they're strong enough, but I'm going to give them a go myself.

Yer i run the owner ST41 2x good trebles all my xraps get the upgrade with rings and trebles and i wash what i use for the day as well,but those new decoys look interesting.
