Just a quick report on whats doing in the passage of late, have done several trips up to donnybrook in the last week or so chasing flathead, like most waterways its best to avoid on weekends as the numbers of crab pots you have to dodge is mindblowing, anyway wednesday i took my partners boy zac up for a flick as low tide was around 5.30am and thats generally when i find the area most productive, the water temp on my sounder was showing up at 28 degrees, i really believe that the warmer temps put the flathead off feeding as we had some great drifts along drop offs that normally produce for us but the only flathead caught was a small 30cm model, bring on the cooler months i say, zac did manage to hook up with 2 trevally on my 2 kg outfit, a stradic 1000 on a pflueger 1-3kg, both fish really gave him curry with both circling the boat many times before coming to the net and then released.
In short we have found the flathead to be very scarce of late..75747

I think your right about the flatties not biting when its too hot.
Was down at redcliffe the other day, pulled in a few nice flatties, but after about 5:00am they stopped biting.
That must be why Funchy catches so many because he is out in the very early hours of the morning LOL :P :P

Funny isnt it flathead were always thought of as a summer species but for me its chalk and cheese, summer your flat out getting a fish and yet in winter i can catch 20 or more in a session, and yes mossy the atomic prong was the plastic for the trevally, wouldnt leave home without it .:)
PS does anybody have much success for whiting on yabbies in the area?, ive tried a few times but found it very slow..

Hi Alley
Yabbies work reasonably on whiting in the Lime Pocket area, but I find they are not so good up around Coochin, the best catches up there come on worms.
I used to fish the Donnybrook area a lot and used to score a lot of flatties, but this past six mths I have found it a lot harder to get them, my last 3 trips have produced only 1 legal fish each time as well as a few undersize. I really think the the compression of fishing into limited areas due to the Green Zones is reducing catch rates, there is a huge area, where fish are free of boats and people, so why wouldnt they move there, as you mention there is so much boating and crabbing in whats left.
I agree with the above I have always doe better in the cooler months on Flatties than in the summer.
Cheers

Roll on the cold weather - much harder to find them at this time of year. Best fishing is from about 3.00am to 6.00 am - recipe for divorce!!!!

I have been hitting the water at 3:30am getting home around 6:30 am as the little ones get up. They help me clean the fish and missus gets a sleep in! Been working well. Having the Pummy passage at the end of my street helps. I know you gotta travel to where you want to fish MM. Mustt join up for a fish next time you are up this way on a weekend mate?

I dropped a very big mama lizzid this morning around the coochin area, hooked her on a popper in less than a foot of water and dropped her beside the yak whilst trying to get lip grips into her mouth. was easily 85-95cm, dont think she would grace 1m though.
Only got 4 other flatties this morning and two jumbo whiting, the whiting are joining me for dinner tonight.

I think things have changed with the bream too Alleycat. Went out yesterday to my trusty old spots in passage and only got 3 good bream (34-36cm) for my efforts. I remember even 2 -3 years ago, i could get a dozen of that size in the same spots. Anyway, it's always a good time on the water.

Nice little Trevor that. If your after flathead try around the front of redcliffe in the shallows. There should be some nice queenies hanging around donnybrook soon. If the prawns start flicking on the surface they will not be too far away.

We haven't crossed paths lately have we Shawn. Hope you've been doing OK with the fish.
We have been spending a couple of hours around sunrise on the Pine most weekends. Getting a feed most trips (flatties mainly) and releasing a few. Unfortunately I made the mistake of going alone today when Trace decided to have a sleep in. Seriously that woman has a 6th sense about fish and therefore I should have slept in too...but did I listen ??? No, so got a donut...
Will have to try Donnibrook for a change soon. (sorry didn't mean to hijack this thread :) )
