View Full Version : Help with a quality offshore spin outfit
Hi All ....... I'm just trying to help out a mate who is after some advice on a decent heavy offshore spin outfit.
I believe it will be mainly used for jigging / trolling ........ but the reel could be used for chucking poppers at a pinch (but on another rod) - 40 or 50lb braid.
I dont really know to much about this genre of tackle ....... so your thoughts and experiences will be helpful - specially size (daiwa vs shimano) - brand & model ....... & rod selection (maybe a jig & a popping rod) ...... choice of braid
Budget ...... $1600 ish (1 reel & 1 rod) :)
Ta in anticipation

A jigging outfit may be 50-80lb rod (live fibre my choice) coupled with a Daiwa Saltist STT40H loaded with 50lb Jigman braid. Can use this outfit for trolling.

With that sort of cash Nagg he could get two setups, a dedicated heavy spin and a troll / jig rig. The trouble I find with trolling with your spin rig (apart from painful) is that you invariably come across a show that requires some lure tossing and by the time you re-rig from trolling the opportunity has passed.

He has more than enough game gear (overheads) - so how often it would be used for trolling is anyones guess ..... more likely to see a livie chucked at a marlin or bull dollie - deep jigging kings or other ooglies.

This might help make a choice.

Saltigas in various forms, Stellas and perhaps Accurate Twin spins are worth checking out

Oooh, ok then if it were my money I would be happy with a Catalina 6500 and a Smith Komodo Dragon for about that amount of coin.

I have found the best heavy offshore outfit i own and consistently go back to is a Daiwa Z6000 and a relatively cheap T curve 200 jig stick. Naturally there are many combinations today that you can choose but stick to the better reels of Saltiga or the SW series Shimano's; i have outfits with both and they are all good. The outfit mentioned is a great bottom bounce outfit, light jig outfit, can be trolled quite effectively for most surface fish although i would baulk at the billfish family with the rod. Although not perfect you can also float line with this outfit although a longer rod would be desirable it still works a treat as it is especially in deeper water. It also live baits well; just a good all round outfit. Place the reel on a designed purpose popping rod and you are in business chucking poppers as well although this is a bit beyond me these days.

I have the Catalina 4500.........great saltwater reel,it's big brother the 6500 would be my choice aswell.

Along the same lines size wise.........IMO Daiwa has it in the heavy duty saltwater spin gear.......Guys at the local tackleshop are Shimano fans exept for the big spin stuff........Daiwa seems to be a better product according to them

Hard call when you get to the top of the pile so I would say 4500 saltiga or Stella 10000 for 50lb and a 6000or dogfight in daiwa or a Stella in the bigger sizes for 80lb and as far as a rod goes they make a great range in the tcurve series IMO ....matt. I love my saltiga s-extreme 4500 and they do one called a maverick which is high speed retrieve ;D;D;D;D

That's the problem ...... a decent budget :P - size does matter (for flexibility) = no point having a 20000 if you are only fishing 50lb ........:)
i think it will be a Stella 10000 ....... at this stage

The 8K and 10 K Stella SW reels are a touch bigger than the 4500 Daiwa reels. One is around 640 grams the other 595 which is not much but noticeable. If you want to go 40 to 50lb braid and fish line capacity is not an issue (which it isn't where I fish) the Daiwa will suit better. Another big thumbs up for the T curve deep jig 200 spin. As well as it's intended purpose it casts surprisingly well and it's worth trying this as the casting rod as well before getting the second rod. Matched to a Saltiga S extreme 4500 or 4500 maverick and you'll have a brilliant rig. Plus lots of change for the budget when you look at the tackle wharehouse specials going on right now.
My quality offshore spin outfit is a Egrell Bear Essentials rod (8-15kg) with a 4500 Saltiga S Extreme running 50lb daiwa saltiga hyper pe braid. I mostly use it for chucking softies offshore from 1oz-4oz, it can also jig knife jigs up to 120grams and would be great for throwing big poppers around. Not sure about trolling with it though as i use an overhead combo for that.
Think the combo set me back around $1700, which is close to what your mate wants to spend
cheers tim :)

Chris have a look at rayannes in SA. They have some well priced combos. The picks for value are the Catalina and old model saltiga rods for jigging. I think I saw $800 as a combo. If hes jigging I would prefer to start with heavy gear (6500 size Daiwa and pe8) than light and if he wants a lighter setup he still has enough coin left over to get another. They have good prices on Stella combos as well.

ive got a stella 10000 running 80lb braid on a jig master powerspell pe5 rod ,this is a great light jigging rod with tons of power.
my other is a stella 20000 with 130 lb braid on a diawa saltiga pe8=10 rod,ive still been taken to the bottom with this out fit but were talking 40kg fish, the stella reels are awesome.
im thinking of getting a saltiga 6500 reel next and putting that on my saltiga rod and buying the new teretz rod by shimano and putting the stella on it ,all the top end gear is pretty good.
Wow - thanks for the feedback guys .... awesome!
It's funny looking back at when I used to do some jigging ...... relatively small hispeed overheads (30lb mono) & 7ft jig sticks - how times have changed with talk of big spin reels 80lb braid & 6ft rods that can pull the plug out :P
Far out :)
Chris
from my personal experience with jigging and live baiting for kings and aj,s go heavy on the tackle as these guys arnt tackle sensitive,i started out on 50lb gear and quickly went up to 80 lb after 2 trips ,and then progressed up to 130 lb and now i usually pull hooks on the big ones.
the saltiga 56xh is a brute of a rod and will handle the biggest of fish you should be able to get one for around 600 dollars ,and the new saltiga 6500 extreme reel is the weapon of choice with 30 kg of drag but arnt cheap at around 1200 dollars, but id guarantee he will have that out fit for a life time.
Hi all - been doing a fair bit of looking for old mate ..... Interesting stuff - Now , to me going with a Shimano size 18000 / 2000 size spin reel seems akin to running 80W/130 as a standard trolling outfit (awesome if you hook a giant game fish) but probably overkill for the vast majority of fish. Additionally you don't exactly gain a lot in drag pressure over a 10000 size reel (2kg) - so it boils down to capacity ...... and if popping or jigging what species do you need 350M of 80lb braid (besides tackling XOS targets way offshore on jig tackle) :-? ......... just my thoughts based on what I've looked at, but I reckon a 10000 would be the most appropriate size loaded with a quality PE .
In the meantime I've decided to buy a new boat & so I also need a decent jig & popping outfit for my self (plan to do some offshore / reef work)
I decided to go with a Shimano Stella 8000 matched to a Daiwa Saltiga Hiramasa 63HS (50lb Daiwa SW8 braid) ...... Holden meets Ford :D - now this would be my typical jig / livebait outfit - Now I really don't want to get into a whole array of heavy gear as this style of fishing will be a every now and then or when I'm up north & we decide to go offshore.
Since I have a quality spin reel of moderate size (might get another spool for 80lb) ....... It probably makes sense to just get another rod which is better suited to fish poppers rather than another complete outfit ........any suggestions or thoughts ?

Only difference between the 20 000 and 10 000 Stella is the line capacity.
10 000 Stella and Komodo dragon smith is a beauty , pulled a 21 kg GT out with no effort.

Canyon Reels DJR6500 and an OTI OceanXtreme 60-80 Popping rod. Here is a photo of a mate getting stuck into a 10ft bronze whaler. Drag is super smooth the rod is tough as and very well weighted and has a great action and the outfit retails for under $800.. not bad for an american made reel

Don't be surprised if that Hiramasa will throw poppwers decent enough. The T curve 200 deep jig spin is pretty good at only 5 foot 10 so you might find you don't need a second rod. I'd try it first.

I eyed the Hiramasa off for a few reasons - the length (6'3") , the taper , weight ,fuji Sic K guides ....... general quality - being slightly longer than a typical jig rod & not being a broom stick , it wouldn't surprise me if it did a fair job as a medium popper rod ........ It will certainly be tested out
Chris
I was thinking of giving it a go

Canyon Reels are not American made despite what the company originally claimed. They are manufactured in China by M&W and normally sold as "Ocean Wolf". Canyon Reels imports them to the US where they change out the drag washers and relube the bearings and gear case. They refer to this process as being assembled in the US with US and imported parts. These reels probably perform quite well for the price but I doubt that Chris would be happy with one compared to a Stella 8000 or 10000.

thanks Horse ......... the last thing I wanted to do was buy twice - hence spending the coin on a Stella 8000 as my primary spin reel - but always interested on a good back up .

Maybe a touch on the light side for you, but I use a T Curve Lucanus jig rod, PE2-4, 1.98 metres, lures 80-200gm.
It has a great curve for tossing poppers as it is not quite as parabolic as the other T-Curves.
Matches up perfectly with my 4500 Catalina and PE4 braid.

There are a couple of rods in the Samurai range which might be worth checking out (pop10) ........ does anyone have experience with them ?
Samurai seem to do all their rods well ....... certainly my experience with their lighter spin & baitcast rods have been positive . I do like that they are a 2 piece that separates at the butt section (storage is at a premium in the new boat)
I have noticed with popping rods (with the exception of the higher end Daiwas) most blanks are thick walled and very heavy - and by the time you put the appropriate fittings on the rod - you end up with something that feels like a poll vaulters pole :disappointed:
Chris
Gotta love a bargain :P I picked up a Daiwa Saltiga 80TN for not much more than a T Curve ......... brand new - yes its a runout model but it certainly ticks the boxes and I saved a bundle,
I like the removable butt section as it will fit under the floor of the new boat ....... keeping it out of the way till required 8-)
chris.
PS it was a 1 off ...... but I notice that the Mail Order place is selling them for $599

Nice choice Nagg. It sounds like just the thing

It feels weird - having a ginormas 8 foot spin stick ........ but I guess when you throw a 100g popper as far as you possibly can - and then hope to stop a 50lb plus GT before it buries you ......... you are looking at some seriously different tackle!.
Time will tell

i find sometimes on these rods that they have a really long butt section that tends to hamper my casting style. I like small butt sections so i can hold the rod/reel closer. with the long butt sections, you end up having to cast quite differiently, almost like casting a surf rod. I spent about 500 bucks on a tuna rod that had a long butt section which now i dont think I like. Are they all like this? Does anyone else expierience this?

I'm with you ....... I didn't like the really long butts - the Saltiga is pretty good being only 44cm to the centre of the winch fitting - that's only about 3cm longer than my Saltiga jig stick ....... so it's reasonably comfortable to tuck under your arm when you give a popper a rip

Thanks to everyone for the info. I'm setting up for my first GT popping trip at moment with a similar buget. Ended up with a 1800 stella, seemed like the go with a higher retreive rate at 5.7/1 which I've come to like in all reels, 100lds braid and an OTI tuna sniper 60-80lds 8''6'. hopefully will find out how it goes with a decent GT and will let you know. Bought it in Dubai as I was going through and the buget ended including 6 high end poppers aswell, so pretty happy about that.
