Can Anyone Recommend A Quality Marine Mechanic - Sydney North Shore / Beaches

Hi – Can anyone recommend a marine mechanic (experienced and honest) for my 115hp Yamaha 2 stroke 1998 model. I am at Pymble in Sydney so I would prefer them to be located on Sydney north shore / beaches.

I purchased the boat recently and I would like a quality mechanic to do a full inspection and assessment. I took her for the first run last weekend and the alarm when off after 5 minutes (oil?).

I wouldn't leave it a week at this time of year. Just call him and tell him straight what the story is and mention you were referred on the forum.

What was the alarm - one beep - a long tone any lights ??

Did it turn off when motor was stopped and then restart?

Was water coming from the telltail of the motor?

Basically 2 alarms on 2 strokes . First is low oil in the container, then no oil. Next is overheat alarm where not enough water is being pumped through it. Some have a charge circuit alarm . Since the boat is new to you I would be having impeller changed and checking the oil and fuel system on the motor and having it tuned . That and oil in the gearbox covers 99% of failures and unreliability. Batteries from underused boat is the high percentage failure point along with wiring closely followed by the steering stiffening up. All these need a look to make sure you are safe on the water

Seriously get the whole package looked at asap so you know where you stand before you go spending money on the trailer. Have him compression test the motor so you know now if it is good etc etc. He'll give you some ideas on the trailer and a look around the hull and transom.

I'll throw in a hint . Most older boats have nav lights that now don't comply and the sydney water police are like a rabid dog since the big accidents in the harbour so make sure your all round white light is on a pole above cabin and head height and can be seen from 360 degrees.

If you are mechanical at all or have a mate who is servicing and checking the outboard with a manual is no big deal in the future and a good thing to learn.

Hi Cormorant – firstly thanks for the advice on the trailer resto (separate thread).

You are 100% spot on. I will get someone to assess the overall BMT (boat motor trailer) package and take advice. While I look forward to getting “hands on” I understand this is not my area of expertise and I will need advice and industry professional’s also.

I purchased the BMT recently and will resto the trailer first, then I thought service / repair motor and take her for a few runs to work out the desired set up. Then I want to 2 pack respray the hull, redo lighting and electrics, etc. The overall aim is to end up with a reliable and comfortable 19ft family boat (Read – peaceful fishing away from the family ;-)

The alarm was one long beep. I turned off the motor for 15 minutes then started (no alarms) ran for 10 minutes and, bingo, alarm went off again. Gauges not working properly, internal oil container is 90% full, external oil container full, but a pump that look rusted to me. I checked the oil filter which was ok. I recon it’s an oil issue, but happy to get it sorted out as part of its next overall assessment / service.

Like you said there are other areas that need to be checked / serviced.

The learning curve is pretty high at the moment!
