When I was younger I used to drool over Shimano Calcuttas and Chronarchs. I am talking the very first models here.
I always loved baitcasting reels and back then, could only afford ABU and PENN.

Today , I bought my first Chronarch...not the latest E6, but the preceeding CH100D5.
I had to buy this reel when I saw that it was $140 off the normal price and that it has the same breakweight access as my Calcutta TE200. The brake case is mounted to the reel body and not the sideplate .
The latest Chronarch has the brake case mounted to the sideplate the same as the Curado.

In my humble opinion, this is a backward step, as the spool can fall out when the sideplate is opened.
Anyhow, I guess you only get what you pay for...so I think I got a bargain

Mate i have the older Original pearl Chronarch 100B........"the esence of a low profile baitacaster"......It is around 13 years old now and has not missed a beat,it has some slight corrosion on the chassis and the chronarch badge fell off years ago and the rubber thumbar looks a little knackered but still to this day it casts like a beauty and still gets a run alongside my 2 Calcutta dc's.When they came out they had a teflon drag washer along side the standard fibre washer, mine has long since been replaced with a carbon set,

The little cronarch has landed barra to 118cm and many a fiesty GT,it would have boated in exess of 1000 barra in it's time so far.

I hear your pain!!!

I have the gold chronarch 100SF....I wish I had 10 of them! best reel ever owned.

Anyhow, before ol NAGG gets on here, I will save him the trouble!!!...here is the link to a thread about the decreasing quality, in order to make a good real a budget reel....sad way to wreck the reputation of such a good reel in its day.

Thanks Steve ...... you stole my thunder ;D

yep ....... that is exactly the case - and as more and more fishoes buy this stuff who experienced the earlier models will realise this.

Shimano are not doing themselves any favors by building reels like this - specially on the back of a name that was well respected (Chronarch)
