I'm going to chase some summer whitting this summer and was wondering what rods are best.
What do people prefer. I.'m thinking 8 foot rods

Mate for whiting I grabbed a el-cheapo ebay rod and overhead - very very light graphite rod - 1kg or so class and used 2 pound test and it catches them like crazy!

I use a Gary Howard estuary 9 ft 2-5 kg match up with a 5 inch alvey, It does the job for me on large summer whiting

Tim

Go the Synder Contessa 9' extra light, or the the 10'6 Crusoe Island ( which i reckon is a cracker of a rod!)

Cheaper are the wilson Heritage range as well, have a couple of those and they are great as well,

Look at a 9'-10'6" if using an Alvey or a 7'-8' if using a spinning reel

Have a look at the new Austackle Voodoo Nibbler its been purpose built for the whiting fisherman and comes in at 7'06 and 1-3kg with 3 seperate nibble tips for various actions.
These rods are exceptionally priced aswell.

Ok

My two choices are crusoe 10'4 or contessor in xl 9 foot . I have alot of cheapy rods which i will use for deckies.

The question is should i buy a one peice or two??? i will be buying two identical rods. Crusoe is $139 each and $149 for the two peice

I don't fish for whiting seriously but from what some of the fellas that do, it seems its best to use a variety of rods as they perform different functions. One is used out wider and one in close. If you have not grown up using a long rod out of small boats then anything over 10' is a bit of hard work.

I use two rods; one is an old JW "Estuary Blackfish", 3 metres, 2 piece, 2-4kg with a fast action. I use 2 Alvey 5" reels with it, one is loaded with 4lb mono and the other is loaded with 6lb mono.

The other is an ebay red hot special which cost about $20, including the freight to the house. It's 7', one piece, 2-4lb (lbs, not kgs) and I use a 2000 reel with 4lb mono. If it goes overboard, I don't care.

I seem to do better using the old JW.

BTW, the last time I was at Iluka, a pro gave me a mark for whiting somewhere in the general vicinity. Haven't caught a whiting there yet.
