If you import you could get a Curado E5/E7 for way under that budget............$200 in Oz is borderline on the quality IMO $250 for shopping local.

Also have a look at the Daiwa HSTA100st in that budget......not as good as the Curado imo but you might be a Daiwa man,not sure on the price of a Abu Revo inshore atm but in your ballpark and you should have a look aswell..........Don't think you'll squeeze a Zillion in for $200.

Importing will give you the best bang for buck so to speak..........i just recieved another reel from Minstor on E=bay and have to say i will deal with them again .........great price and fastest delivery yet......6 days to Darwin.

Decide on what you want and go research it.........checkout the Scorpion DC while your at it!

Are you casting or trolling? The Curado is perfect for casting all day. For trolling I like something bigger like a 400 Calcutta which I usually buy secondhand off US ebay for that budget.

I will second the vote for the Curado. However, I bought another overhead about a year ago, the Shimano Caenan, it sells for around $120. I got mine in a combo with a Raider rod for $179. It goes really well for the money. The drag is not up to the high standard as my Curado, but it still is really smooth. It is also great to cast with.

I bought a Johnny Morris special from bass pro in Las Vegas 6 weeks ago. I chose it over the revo and curado. Awesome reel, paid 159. I run it on a shimano t curve

Ok the old green series is the e series. The new ones are g. (they missed f as they use f inn
Model names to disguinsh front drag)

E5/e7 of g5, g7 just refers to the gear ratio. Think of it as a car lower gear more power less speed. U will want a e5 5:1 gear ratio. As u want the torque to pull big barra.

However the e7 or g7 (g7 isn't actually a 7:1 ratio any more it's in the 6's) obviously they have a bigger gear set wich means bigger drag no biggie u can always use your finger on the spool for extra drag. Or get carbontex washers at any time (<$50)

As for the canean reel a mate just bought one from Bcf he loves it and for $200 combo u can't beat it.

Abu's in smaller sizes <4600 can be worth a look as well.

Tacklewarehouse in USA has there 12days of Xmas sale on and there were a few good reels for like 50% off ($300 reel down to $150) which would cost close to $500 here. Postage would be $20ish well even a rod is $33 delivery.

I got my cvz 203 for 200 bucks from the states before the US dollar dropped. Its been very reliable considering I never look after it.
Doesn't matter what you get Matt, once you catch a few you will end up a tackle junky just like the rest of us.

The gear ratios on casting reels are more for lure retrieval speed. My style of luring for Barra and Murray Cod requires the slower ratio, around the 5-1. If you are chasing Queenys the fast retrieve would be handy. If you are relying on reel torque to wind large fish in, I think you should change your technique. If anything a fast retrieve would be handy to keep some weight on those cheeky fish that swim straight at you.

In your budget - I would have a gander also at the Daiwa CB 153H Coastal Barra retails in aus for $230.00. Nice low profile baitcaster that can handle the effects of saltwater environment. 6 bearings, 6:3 ratio, 235 grams, 12lb -140m. nice little barra reel.

How bad does the new chronarch look! Hate it. I view the curado as Shimano's flagship low profile baitcaster now.

The Curado has copped a kick in the nuts as well. The new Chronarch has replaced the old Curado quality wise in my opinion. I prefer the old model in both reels. Shimano has degraded these very good reels all in the name of cost cutting.

yeah, its sad to see actually as i have used shimano for years. i have an old curado 300dsv. they dont make them in that size anymore. daiwa seems to be advancing alot. Take a look at the t-wing baitcasters, further development of their oil seal, air rotors, cast controls to just name a few areas whereas with shimano you get change in colours??? one company is going up and the other company is going sideways...just my opinion though.

Your opinion is pretty right though.!!

Best value for that money...now IMHO...is the Daiwa Advantage HSTA153....still great barra reels. I have a few, sold my curados to get them (and I am a shimano man generally)..thankfully I have kept some old Chronarch SF100 and a Calais 100....still sweet reels.
