Problem with Yamaha F60

Hi guys,

I'm having a minor problem with my 2007 F60 outboard and was hoping someone might be able to suggest a possible fix. It's like the motor is running out of fuel at times. It runs fine, but will suddenly start to surge, then die, exactly the way it would if you had run out of fuel. I can then pump the primer bulb and it will be ok for a while. Is there a secondary pump, (aside from the high pressure pump), that sucks fuel up from the tank? I'm thinking it has to be a failing pump. I've replaced the fuel filter and there doesn't appear to be any leaks in the lines, although I might replace all those as well while I'm going.

Dave, another cheap option is to replace the primer bulb. Not too sure if it will work, but it'll be cheaper than towing the boat to Mackay. Have you tried ringing the guys at Reef Marine - they are Yammy dealers. Reef Marine's multi award winning achievements spanning 40 years are testament

Firstly, I would change your primer bulb with a new genuine Yamaha primer bulb. And yes you will have a lift pump.. The lift pump work on suction and sucks up the fuel from the tank... Sometimes these can play up, but unlikely..

Changing your fuel line is not a bad idea, its cheap to do and you eliminate the posibility off air leaks.. Just make sure you get high quality fuel hose that is E10 compliant and good quality hose clamps.. Find out what is the reomended hose size is for your motor and make sure you do not get anything smaller

And even though that primer might seem like its OK, the chances are its not.. I had the same issue with my motor, turned out to be the primer bulb...

Try primer bulb then fuel lines.......the lines can and do break down internally with cheaper hose.(silver mercury the worst)

Thanks guys. The primer bulb was the first thing I replaced, but just a BCF job, thought they would be just as good. I might try the fuel lines next and if no good I'll take it to reef marine. It does have 800 odd hours on the engine, not sure if that would have much bearing on whether the lift pump could be due for replacement.

there is a hight pressure fuel filter between the lift pump and the high pressure fuel pump, this quite often gets over looked. Symptoms are exactly as you describe.

Not sure if yours is a yammy 2 stroke or a 4 stroke my son inlaw has a yammy 60 4 stroke he got a bad load of fuel a lot of water too much for his external filter it did the same as yours it would run couple of minutes then stop prime it and away it would go it turned the water had affected the injectors .I could write exactly what happened but to cut a long story short thats what his problem was .

I don't know if you run tote tanks or an under floor,but I run the Yammy 24lt plastic tanks and when I have forgot to open the breather on the cap it has the same symptom.Simple thing, but horrible feeling when out 15nm and motor stops.I have 2000 hrs + on my 2007 FT60 and still goes like a beauty.

It's a 4 stroke and I have an under floor tank. I'll have a look at the high pressure filter, Gary is it a pull out and clean job or a throw away and replace?? Looks like it's only a small little thing. I haven't cleaned the other standard fuel filter that's under the cowl either, I'll get on to that one too. I run a Racor water separator filter, the element in it has been changed.

Its a throw away type located between the Lift pump and the high pressure filter. they should be changed every 4 years or 400hrs

I haven't got to the bottom of it yet. The boat has been stored for the past 12 months but is almost ready to hit the water again now. I've replaced the fuel lines/ primer bulb and main fuel filter, will just have to see how it goes.

after you saying that it had been sitting for a year got me thinking could wasps made a home in the breather inlets?

No I don't think so. The boat was in regular use when the problem surfaced, but it is something else to look at.

Our yacht club rescue boat has a 50hp merc, which I am convinced is just a yammie motor on a merc leg. It had the exact same problem as you describe. Anyway, there is a low pressure fuel pump on the back of the motor, exactly the same place and type as my 50hp yammie. One of the guys at the club pulled it off, tested and seemed ok, put it back on and now the problem is gone. Not sure why, maybe it was sticky or something stuck in there.
