View Full Version : Shimano Saragosa 4000 for an Egrell S10?

Hi All,
I recently purchased an Egrell S10 for tossing plastics for snapper and slugs for tuna in the Bay.
My issue is that I can't decide on a reel to use. As a minimum, I'll toss on my 4000 Stradic Fi. I've just thrown on a 3000 Sol for the fun of it, but the Sol is too light and affects the balance.
I like the idea of a higher gear ratio (for spinning), and that pretty much narrows me down to a 4000 Saragosa or a Diawa Saltist. The Saragosa is about 25g heavier than the Stradic, but the Saltist is over 200g heavier! (569g for a 4000 sized reel!)
However, reading about the Saragosa, it sounds like it's a true workhorse in such a way that one might not expect it to be overly finesse or smooth.
So, opinions on the Saragosa?
Also, other options, high speed or not, in the <$500 range?
As a tantrum on the side, the new Shimano range seems to have a big hole in it. Basically, you jump from <$300 reels to >$800 reels. I'm not in marketing, but in my eyes, there's a whole market there that they've excluded.
Cheers!
hey mate. yes the saragossa is deisgned for saltwater jigging and spinning and with a high retrieve per crank would be a good choice. its weight is unbelievable for a 10kg reel. light is good. nothing makes your arms sore than high speed spinning. Just another option to throw at you - Have you checked out the Daiwa Catalina 4500H. Very nice reel. I think your budget can handle it but is much heavier than saragossa but better materials in it and will last longer and easily handle the bigger fish. only issue is the weight.

i bought a Saragosa for my custom rod and its great landed 1mtr plus queenies and 8kg plus GT's with no problems very good cheaper reel. i didnt expect it to be so good. have also landed many trevally, fingermark and a couple trout so its been a great allrounder.
i did have one problem the drag was tightening as i was fighting fish but it turned out to be a simple fix the washer they used was too skinny on the spool fixed under warranty in a day
cheers

Daiwa Sol or Heartland 4000 will go well on the S10
I used to own a S10-H and had a Tierra 4000 on it, then upgraded to a Sol 4000, and then a Certate 4000, the Certate was the best out of the 3 but they don't make them in a 4000 size anymore.
I have now upgraded to a more powerfull combo for offshore, Egrell Bear Essentials and a 4500 Saltiga S Extreme.
Regarding the Saragosa, i doubt it would have 10kg of drag, i had a saragosa 18000F on a jigging rod and it would of been lucky to have 10kg's of drag.
cheers tim :)

Don't forget the Sustain 4000FG. It weighs in 50gms less than the Saragosa with a much faster retrieve rate (99cm v 84cm). Both are rated to 20lb of drag but I would not like to do that to either of them. You can land one for well under the $400 mark

I use a 4500h Catalina with 40lb braid for that work. 5.7:1 gear ratio.

The Sustain FG looks like it fits the bill nicely. I'd have to see how a 4500 Catalina balanced on the rod.
Anyone know when the Sustain FGs are supposed to be released in this country?
Who else has an S10 (I know there's plenty on the board), and what reel do you have on it?
Cheers

There must have been something wrong with your reel. I have pulled 18 kgs of Drag on the 18000 and 9 kilos on the 4000 Saragosa. I own both of them and they are bullet proof reels for under $350 bucks you will be hard pressed to find a better value reel. I have caught G.T's over 25 kilos and Spanish up to 18 kilos on the 4000 Saragosa and it still has not had an issue yet

Dunno took it to Fishhead and got them to check it and they said it was fine.
The only shimano reel i would put on an egrell would be a Stella SW, the rest of the shimano spin reels are dog ugly ;D
cheers tim :)

Love to put a Stella on there, but I'd have to sell a kidney. Also love to toss on a Certate, but they're not making them in a 4000 size.
Re: Daiwa- the Saltist is probably too heavy, and it looks like they've stopped making the Heartland, so in that price point (and weight) in the Daiwa range, it's pretty much down to a Sol 4000.
Re: Shimano- nickstocks experience with the Saragosa is comforting, and the Sustain FG looks pretty damn sweet, although I can't seem to find a release date for the Sustain.....
Cheers!

Last time I was at Tackle Warehouse (last week) they still had a Certate 4000. Might be able to get a good price!!!!

dunno bout the release date for the fg's but i would go the 5000. The 4000 and the 5000 are basically the same reel, weigh the same, same drag power but the 5000 has even a faster retrieve rate and slightly more line capacity. cheers

Very good point. I'll hold off for a few weeks before buying anything to see when the Sustains will be released and what their price will be.

The US Tackle Warehouse is taking pre-orders for the Sustain FG (1000-4000), and they will be available "in winter" over there, so some time in December in the US at the earliest. The 1000 to 4000 models will have CI4 rotors, but I can't find any mention anywhere of what the 5000's rotor will be made of (aluminium would be good).

It looks like the 5000 has the Ci4 rotor as well. It may not be available until January. It may be worth the wait as they sound like the new benchmark for this price bracket

Shimano 2012 Catalogue: "Combine this with the new Magnumlite C14 rotor(except 5000)".
They do have the 4000 and 5000 both down as weighing 304g.

Thanks Everyone,
Seems I couldn't help myself and grabbed the last Certate 4000 at Tackle Warehouse.
I'm still very keen on the Saragosa, and might grab a 6000 size one for spinning Tailor slugs.
And I'm sure a new Sustain will find it's way into my greedy hands in the next few months. I'm sure I've got a rod somewhere that can use it!
Cheers!

Good choice, now get out there and wear the drag in

Just seen the thread, I have a Sol 4000 on the S10 - 30 and 50lb braid, and a Certate 4000 - 50 lb jigman - on the Bear Essential.
