grease or lanolin spray

hi all,

ive gone through all the threads i can find but would like to find out one way or the other whats best for putting on the spindle when changing my rollers on my trailer. i only have a 3.9mtr tinnie but the last and 2nd last roller rolls like a dog and needs cleaning up and replacing. so what would you guys use, caltex boating grease or lanolin spray

Yeah, second that - grease will hang around a lot longer - should re-do them every 6 months as well, but how many of us are too slack to do that ? ::) - I know I am>>>>>>>:-X

Change spindle to stainless, yep costs more, but it don't rust and rolls smoother. Still put some greaseon, cheers pete

Agree with the stainless. And the grease.

An alternative little trick I used on my smaller boat years ago. Drill a small hole straight through the middle of the roller, no matter whether rubber or alloy or poly. About 7-8 mm is about right for the rubber and poly - both seem to colapse a bit, esp the rubber. Match the hole size to your oil can tip for the alloy. Take an oil can with you every month or 2 and squirt some through the hole when you go to get the trailer to retrieve the boat. Much easier than doing the under the boat thing and taking the pins out every 6 months or so to grease them.... which we never do.... cos we are slack..... ;-/

you will find that lanolin is not realy a good lubricant, its to sticky and will actually cause it to bind rather than free it up, but a great rust preventer. grease,oil, or your pressure pack sprays are the go

Marine grease is the only way to go. I bring a can of lithium grease ( from bunnings) and spray the rollers after a few trips. I also spray this stuff on all my bolts and rusty trailer bits.

I have meant to check the bearings on the trailer 2 years ago but it's still on my to do list.
