Hi guys and gals.

I am seriously considering a trip to Lord Howe Island.

Firstly, I suppose has anyone been there and can you pass on your experience.

Need to know..

accommodation options

fishing options

time of year ( best )

your costs..

Then.... is there anyone else who wants to go there ? I have lots of issues with travel being a single entity, in that everytime I want to go somewhere etc. it is twin share / per person... quad share... etc etc etc

thanks in advance

Phill

It's been ages since I went there Phil - but I do understand that Capella is still the place to stay ( costs a bomb though) plenty of other options though...... March / April is a good time of year though wind can put a dampner on fishing any time of the year ( though the lagoon is a good option as it is protected from prevailing winds).
It's funny - but I was only thinking about Lord Howe only a few weeks back & from my research ....... (give this some thought) put together a crew of 4-6 people then look at chartering a few of the different boats that offer different styles of fishing ( most charters range from $500 - $1000 / dbay for the boat) This way you can experience blue water game fishing (marlin , YFT , Wahoo) , shallow water sportfish ( double headers , Trevally ) , jigging for kingfish at alls Pyramid , Inshore sportfishing (Kingfish , tuna etc) over a period of say a week.
I'd put my hand up for that !

Chris

PS - A big cost is the flight - then accom
PPS - LHI is just one of the best destinations you could imagine ..... well worth going there8-)

I keep seeing very cheap airfare/accom deals advertized for LH on a remarkable regularity. Always offered as combos and usually around the 850-900 p/p t/s for 5 days etc.
Jump onto http://www.dealme.com.au/ website and look for the daily deals, comes in email every day, sit tight and wait till it shows again.
Norfolk arrives from time to time too.

That would be a pretty good price considering that a rock bottom flight costs around $600 & anything up to $1200 return ........ bloody expensive place to fly to

Looks as if around the $1600 per person 7 nights including airfares, transfers and taxes is the go. Meals and tours on top.

This is standard and I haven't found a " deal " yet.

LP, forget the expensive airfares.

I'm sure if you slip Booney some fuel money, he'll take you out there in his Centre Consol!:o;D

Extreme!!

Al McGlashan (in his book 'Top Fishing Spots of Australia') advises;

"The best time to vist is during the summer and autumn months when the weather is at it's warmest and the winds ae mostly light .... coinciding with the peak of the gamefishing season for migrating pelagics like yellowfin tuna and wahoo. Kingfish are found year-round, although the bigger fish are usually encountered in November/December or April/May.
During winter months the island suffers from strong southerly swells that pound straight into the lagoon, making it hard for boats to manoeuvre out of this area. As a result, few people fish during this period."

Cheers,
