Hi Guys I have now been fishing a few times in the Coomera river with no luck, can anyone tell me general areas's to try and what times/tide's to go ?
yesterday was the first time I have had a serious go, didnt find any deep holes to fish for that mater :)
None the less had a good time fishinging with bait and throwing lures.

Also I have a 3.7 mtr Stacer with a little 5hp Evinrude, how far out the Coomera River will it go, many people say they take boats like thatinto the broadwater and so on, but its rather small and tides pulling against the little 5hp might be a little painfull.

hi, i cant help with any spots in the river (unless you are after mudcrabs:-X) but i used to push a 5.5metre glass boat with a 5 hp auxillary at 6 knots. so long as youve got the safety gear and use common sense theres no reason what so ever why you cant take your tinny all over the place.

do a search on coomera river and im sure you will pick up some tips on spots, baits and tides

cheers ryan:)

Nothing wrong with the 5hp mate, i had a 6hp on my 3.6m in the broadwater no worries, pushed her along just fine, nice and safe. Just have to watch all the weekend idiots on their jet skis and luxury yachts!!

Marko head towards the Oxenford Tavern. Take a right at the lights. Continue towards the old gold coast bridge alongside the M1. Before you reach the old bridge, look left and you'll notice a large park with rowing facilities and a boat ramp. Launch here and head up river inland. from here it's 6 knots up river towards a large Resort living community. Watch your prop beware of the sholes at low tide. For your first trip. Try it at a high tide untill you can get your bearings on the low water Hazards.

When the Muddies start too show you might just surprise yourself. Since the water temp is starting too warm up so are the Jacks and cod. Many a time I've ventured around these parts in my 15ft Barra canoe with a 2.5hp John'o on the back. Venture up as far as the Weir, with good live bait like poddy and herring, you once again might be in for a nice surprise.

Cheers,
Viper.

I'm camping at Currigee (Sth Straddie) next week for 4 days with the wife - bringing the boat.

Is it pushing it to explore much of the Coomera river with a 5.3m glass boat & 90hp ETEC? Or is it just to shallow?

Wife & I are hoping to flick some lures & plastics around, but last camping trip here we came back empty handed :(

We're not brave enough to cross the seaway & out to the reefs (coming back is the scary part!), so would prefer to keep safe & tucked away in the broadwater. I read a lot of fishing reports about the Coomera river, but most seem to involve yaks or tinnies (or at least smaller auxiliary outboards).

Cheers,

Matt

The Coomera will be fine until you hit the rocky shoals mentioned earlier, but that's way upstream past M1 bridge. Doubt you'd need to be up that far, especially with plenty of good water closer to Sth Straddie (eg. Sovereign, Wavebreak Is, Crab Is.)

A bloke the other day told me about a shore based spot up further along the Coomera at Oxenford.

He says he's seen plenty of times, people fishing with a light set up using peeled prawn or worms with no lead weights at all.

They just cast out into the flow and catch good size bream. It is where the fresh water starts apparently.

The landmark he gave me was that it was close to the Anglican Church on Holy Road, 192 Oxenford-Tamborine Rd.

Might be worth a burl...

Theres a boat ramp at Tallawood Road on the coomera, throw a cast net to collect some livies from the pontoon and put them out. Quite a large variety of fish including baby hammerhead sharks caught there. You could always flick plastics and lure at all the likely spots you see there. Good luck.

Hi Mark0, I live up the top end of the river and have fished there over the past 6 years (unfortunately the work-life balance has been unbalanced lately).
There's still plenty of fish in the Commera River, but I must say, just like many places on the Gold Coast, it's not like it used to be :-[

I headed out for a couple of hours on the boat Sunday afternoon with my wife and 23 mth old (Google Maps Mark -> http://g.co/maps/ypbhm) with some ok success ( IMO ::) ), Mangrove Jack (37cm), 4 x Tailor (up to 45cm), Small Black Jew (60cm) (1st time i've caught a Jew up there? it was released), few muddies and the typical catfish. Quite a few more hits too which was encouraging. Nothing mazing, but a feed nonetheless and it's always great just to be on the water.

In saying this, it's common to land flatheads, bream and mangrove jack along the banks west of the M1, just be careful navigating the shoal a few hundred meters up. Stay close to the north side of the river, and then aim for the 6 knots sign when your about 70m from the bank.

Good luck and keep us posted on how you go
