I was wondering if anybody has tried using murray cod techniques such as big, slow, wide actioned lures used for cod or spinnerbaits. There was a recent article in a fishing magazine that mentioned using cod lures to help get to the strike zone in certain depths because of their steep diving angle. The reason I am wondering is that often a change in technique and styles often evokes strikes in educated fish or shutdown fish such as impoundment fish or fish in heavily fished areas. Cod lures can be retrieved extemely slowly and keep their action far more slowly than most barra specific lures. Cod spinnerbaits also can be fished slowly and can be fished in tough country and send out lots of vibrations as well which would also help. My thoughts are that this may also help in keeping lures in the face of shutdown fish for much longer and hopefully elicit a strike. Anybody had success using "out of place" techniques with success?
Cheers

I have caught plenty of Barra casting with medium-sized stump jumpers, using a farly slow retrieve. Barra often just need lures in front of their noses...

Jase ..... always good to try something different .
I've tried a couple of big wide bodied silent cod lures ....... but with little success ( doesn't mean it does not work though)
I have not tried spinnerbaits but have tried mumblers & caught barra. ...... ( Matty Mott caught barra at Monduran when fishing the AFC bass event a few years back)
It would be interesting to see if you get some responses from a few southern anglers ........ I know we've run into a few western NSW cod anglers at Faust but they were using more traditional barra lures & plastics.
GIVE IT A GO!

I will give it a go. Cod lures and Spinnerbaits in the salt could be the next big thing :) I am originally from Inverell in Northern NSW where I have great success in the past on typical barra plastics such as slick rigs on cod and suprising success with suspending x raps on golden perch. I wanna see if it can go the other way I don't see why it shouldn't fish don't know what lure they are supposed to eat. Often something out of the ordinary may suit a certain situation better than other more popular methods so why not give it go

I know someone who has used spinnerbaits and even wobblers with success on Barra so its would be well worth a try.

spinnerbaits work well on tropical reef fish.

yeah i used spinner baits in awoonga way back and had success. That was before it was open to the public though and the fish weren't all that big. Not sure whether it would still hold but Jack seems to have answered that.
