went to ballina fishing off the rocks near the vmr with my boys this weekend.today i landed 6 bream one legal an my young fella got one to.as im learning we were pretty happy,we were using prawns from the local tackle shop.there was a decent swell so i used a number 3 sinker(running from my hook to swivel)with a number 1/0 hook.the swell would wash the rig around to the rocks and thats where the bream would bite.is this a good method?or could i have used say a heavier sinker and gone straight to the strike zone say.also i was wondering by doing this does it limit other catches?for example would a heavier sinker put me right into the bottom for a flathead say.or am i just bloody thinking to much, lol.i had intended to give my growing sps arsenal a workout, but i forgot what its like with a 7 an 11 yr old.no way to concentrate so ill stick with the bait.had a ball tho with the boys, priceless day.regards john

Fishing the washes around the rocks I would dispense with the swivel and fish a 00, 0 or 1 sinker right on the top of the hook, just enough for it to drift down into the strike zone. A weightless bait in freefall will get lots more attention to something being dragged around by a heavy sinker. Just enough weight to achieve that freefall is the best.

Fishing those spots will always be treacherous for snags, for bream always keep your rig as light as possible, including the leader.
And as cheap as possible..

If it ain't broke - don't fix it lol. What you are doing for bream is fine. If you want lizards get some live poddies and fish one under a float a foot or two above the bottom.

Nothing wrong with what your doing mate. You and the boys had a good day what more could you ask. As Ticer say dont really need the swivel its just a another point to get snagged on the rocks. The lizzards wont be far from the bream in reality

Absolutely. If the baits near or on the bottom your in with a chance. Not alot of lizards down that way at the moment but that will change in the next 3-4 weeks
