Help on Trevally and Ciguatera

My sister and brother-in-law are sailing north at the moment (nice life) and managed to score this Trevally in the Boyne River south of Gladstone. They are a bit worried about ciguatera and asked me to do a bit of research. From what I have quickly googled it looks like Trevally over 6kg may be a problem so I have a few questions for those with more experience.

i) Is this fish over 6kg? It was just over 900mm long so I am guessing yes but to be honest I have no idea.

ii) Is ciguatera common in Trevally?

iii) Is ciguatera common around Gladstone? I have heard that some areas are worse than others and also the time of year could be relevant.


Any info or opinions would be welcome,

I have eaten them that size with no drama. My grandfather used to eat the golden trevally all the time, he never got sick from them in the 35 years i've seen. Might be luck in the end, you just don't know really? My cousin caught a 12kg mac and got the cig illness, poor bugger. We have eaten macs much bigger with no drama again.

I'd say it's fine to eat. Others here may have a different opinion?

Trevally are not known to carry Ciguatera, fine to eat. Once Trevallys start getting too big the edible qualities aren't much good, Golden's are one of the better ones to eat I have eaten quite a few from around those parts.

I'd only be worried about it if it was caught off Wathumba Ck on Fraser Island. It should be fine.
