I was preparing for a jigging trip and got a nasty surprise taking the Stella out of its bag... some sort of corrosion on the spool lip!:(
I thought that the Stella was ceramic coated, etc. so I am at a loss to explain it. Has anyone seen, heard anything like this?

I have no idea but wouldn't ceramic coating chip?
It looks more like abraision, is it also on the gold lip?

It looks more like abraision, is it also on the gold lip? Nah, it's only on the silver lip and it's not abrasion it's more like something ate away the surface coating... I always rinse and bag my reels after fishing, so I'm really not impressed with that sort of damage on a $200 spool! The only thing I can think of is that maybe I sprayed some inox that I didn't wipe and that caused a chemical reaction? I'd welcome any kind of explanation.:-?

Just give shimano a ring, warranty should fix that up surely.
Not cool though, when you pay that much you would expect it to hold up a little better

Stella wins hands down. Just had a trip out off Stanage to the percys and then onto the Swians chasin Gts. had 2 Tuff reels 1 x saltiga and the Stella 18000. Casting wise no contest stella all the way. Weight about the same Stella and Saltiga but Tuff Reel heavier. 1 x tuff reels instant anti reverse failed. Not good. All reels drags held up and did a good job. Stella felt the best to use though and when you are casting solid for 2 days I know what I would rather in my hands
You're not the only one ........ Miss Stella has cancer of the spool too >:( very uncool for a top shelf reel

bloody hell I have 25 buck reels that don't get looked after and 5 years old with no cancer like that, I would be very upset :( with $$$ paid for them
cheers Murf
Nagg, that looks like a metal or chemical reaction under the line to cause that, not the spool just corroding.
Metaloid, Inox is a good friend to all reels so leaving some on is GOOD. If it's early corrosion it should be covered by warranty.

Generally - the reels are sprayed with Inox or tackleguard - as you can see by the photo ( the corrosion is at the knot - but more telling is the fading / wear the first few wraps of line around the spool is ) clearly the coating that they use is ultra ultra thin .
where this becomes disappointing is that this reel gets only light use & for targetting bream & bass ........ so not exactly line burners that are creating huge pressures where the line may bury into the spool to wear it down.
When I Compare this to my 13yo Daiwa Emblem X which has done much more work and you see no signs of corrosion .

Metal and the ions in it might react to impurities in the metal or the paint maybe.
I do not use Inox, it is lanolin based isn't it, lanolin that comes from wool?
It reacts with some rubbers, so it might react with some paints and nylons as well.
I just lightly rinse my reels in fresh water after use and spot oil them now and then.

That is Lanox ( with lanolin)
My Stella up to that time was only lightly sprayed and wiped with tackleguard - more recently started to use Inox
seems strange that this is the only time I have seen this type of thing on any of my gear

use ballistol, odd smell but safe for just about everything, all my gear gets a dose of it regularly

most of that sort of thing starts with a small scratch or chip, might not even remember knocking it on a rail or something, then a bit of salt, and some water when being washed, into a cupboard or bag for a while and hey presto, corrosion, I have seen the same thing on a couple now, so maybe it is a "feature" kind of doubt warranty will come into it.
