I have an ABU 7000 that is approximately 10 years old and in excellent condition. It is presently spooled with 15lb mono but I am wondeing if this reel is suitable for braid and if so, what strength braid? Cheers Winston.

briad is ok if you going to use in a boat, but if you try casting from a beach youll wish you stuck with mono...jmo

Reckon 30lb would be as much as you would go. Should get about 300m on depending on the brand. Unless you have really beefed up the drag anything heavier would be a waste as they havent go the balls to fish anything more than about 5 or 6kg of drag.

been running 30lb braid on Abu 7000's for years off the beach and never had a problem....unless you're trying to cast into a stiff breeze and then any overhead is going to struggle for distance. IMO I'd much rather cast a "stiffer" fused type braid like Fireline than mono - much better distance and I find easier to control. Agree the limp "cotton" like braids are a different proposition. The way they can stick to the spool on a long cast can give you grief.
cheers Rob
