Foul weather for the long weekend, but had to do some fishing :

Sat night got two Bigeye Trevs (+/- 40cm's) in the Tweed on 40g slugs (runout tide). There was so much baitfish around - the water was "glowing" & I thought I would get into the fish big time. Just as the bite seemed to be getting hot a party boat arrived with lights glaring, horn tooting and revellers singing. It proceeded to U-turn right over my spot :o After a frustrating 10 minutes before they moved off, i hoped that the bite would return. A few seconds later and a pod of dolphins arrived and started feasting on the baitfish, and then the rain started pouring .... so I packd up and went home. Session interrupted !!

Monday night I hit the surf near Kirra. Landed a nice Flathead, and 1 chopper on dark. Suddenly I saw the ominous headlights of a convoy heading towards me - THE *^#(*%$*&##&)(@*(*&%$%&*(@# NETTERS were coming!!! 200mtrs away from me they stopped and within seconds launched a boat into the surf, spreading their nets. 60seconds later and they were hauling in the nets with the help of 4wd's. I gave up fishing and went to have a look. I estimate about 5 tons (judging by the size of a 1ton UTE tray) of mullet being hauled in those 10 minutes of work - the stench of mullet hung thick in the air around them as the bulging nets were emptied into dozens of crates. I took the liberty of staying around to search for "bycatch", and was very happy to count only 2 Tailor (NO jew) in the next hour that i stood and watched. When I asked about "bycatch" the head-huncho was very quick to comment - "no mate - we never catch jew, we only target mullet". I took the fast and terse comment as being "do not stick your beak into our business" and left it at that .... being outnumbered 15 to 1 are not good odds for arguing against on the dark beach ;D

I guess that the fishing will be a waste of time along there for the next while now, as anythong that was around has been spooked back to the depths :(

ANyways - I got a feed for the family over the 2 interrupted sessions, but not happy witnessing mass-harvesting of jew-food along our GC beaches.

Thanks for the report.
You know the netters have slaughtered the mullet from Brunswick to now Kirra.
Every school they have netted and for what-

Roe to go to Asia and cheap mullet fillets.

Now each beach is a waste of time to fish on for 1-2 weeks.
How many people who don't know about the netting are going to front up and catch nothing.

Blood is boiling again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry i did not catch up with ya Rob, but scored a jew, mullet, pike and a tailor in quick succession If the netters have been around the beach will be quiet for a while i dare say. Did ya ask for a few fresh mullet for your troubles?

I was tempted to sneak a few of the ones lying loose on the beach into my eski :-)
But thought better of the 15 to 1 odds, and also cannot morally expect to catch my own fish on stolen bait :-)
[ they were not the type of blokes to be asking for a freebie from either .... one poor fella copped such a cussing from the boss-man because he loosened his grip on the net and 3 mullet swam away .... like they didn't have 3000 others to keep :-( ]
