As a few of you know at this time of year i tend to head to Mud chasing tailor but this year they have been a bit late coming in ,in numbers so a few weeks back a mate wanted to chuck placcies and not having any jig heads another mate lent me a few and i brought a pkt of 5 inch nuke chicken and we headed off to mud to look for tailor .
after an hour of no tailor trolling we decided to drift the placcies around and managed a feed of mowong flatties and a big wolf herring and a few big sole
in an hour so i thought this is not half bad so i went and brought a few more jig heads anther couple of pkts of softies.
next trip to mud a fortnight ago same thing no tailor go to my drift spot first cast bang a 34.9 snapper my first on placcies released unharmed, next drift same spot i got clobbered on a 2-4kg stick and 8lb braid and landed a 50plus cm snapper next drift i got clobbered in the same spot but dropped him.
so this morning the mate and i leave pinkenba ramp at 5-15am to be at mud on sunup go to the same spot first drift bang im on fish is giving me a run for my money on the 8 lb then my mate yells im on so we have a double hook up going i get mine boatside and netted take my fish out and net his mine went 48 and his went 47.
next drift same spot i got hammered again and land a 45cm snapper
next drift i lose a tail then it shuts down so went trolling for tailor and managed to find 2 before heading back to the river before it got to breezy
1. do i need professional help for using soft plastics
2. do i keep chasing tailor
3. or do i do both as the snapper seem to shut down about 7am in this spot as it is shallow
SO if the river to mud is on this year i might be torn on what to use lol bait or placcies

Haha Shane good report mate, well done on the placcies, I will have to get a lesson from you pretty soon I think! The tailor are pretty thick around Redcliffe at the moment, a mate was returning in his kayak to shore and only had two pillies left, so he trolled them and landed two very nice tailor!
I got bitten off by one last nite that I fought right to the kayak just on dark, must have been 55, a whopper! Both of us got hooked up on snaps only to have one snagged up and the other escaped, so the tally ended up with another large bream, and one snap @ 38cm.

In relation to 'professional' help, if my wife didn't leave and put my in the poor house, I was well on the way to needing professional help. A year ago, I went through and made a list of what packets of soft plastics I had on the boat, to help with future purchases, of course (another sign of needing professional help?). My list of a year ago consists of 115 packets. And while my purchasing has dropped off immensely, I still tend to buy two packets for every one that I finish, so that number would be even higher now.....

Hi mate. Long time no see. Yes you do need help ha ha ha.
Nice haul and good work.
I'm planning on hitting the bay more this winter, now that the things have settled down, so let me know if you want to catch up and we can go for a fish. It's been to long between drinks.
Cheers

Silent thanks mate it is enjoyable on light gear but i find my heavy rod and 4000 reel a bit of a pain to use.
Damned i feel you pain re the plastics mate now every time i go past a tackle store i want to spend money, i was like that with the Barra my first trip i took a packet of squidies and 4 lures with me and landed 2 fish and dropped 1 at monduren, now i hate to see whats in my barra bag i am flat out lifting it into the boat

Good post mate. I agree with silent if you hooked 1 on plastics your on your way. I found when using plastics for first time the only tie they dont hook up is when your on a fishless area as they always work and they love em. Mud is good for both tailor and snapper so chase both on different times of day. My plastic bag is overflowing so be carefull it is addictive but fun. Cheers D.....

Get help now before it's too late!
I started off 4 years ago with a $80 silstar combo, upgraded it to a wilson LCS and symetre 2500, upgraded the rod to a 1-4kg Shim raider, upgraded the reel to a stella 2500, upgraded the rod again to a Loomis 2-4kg, I have about $600 worth of jig heads and boxes of plastics. If I had known where it was going to lead I would have burnt my first plastics rod, I'm in too deep now and spiral down further every time I walk into a tackle store.
Get Help NOW!
What do you mean "DARK SIDE" Shane ? ( It's the bright side!) - I think it is a fantastic way to fish & extremely satisfying ..... so much so that I find it difficult to sit around and soak a bait - then if I do , the rod gets shoved in a rod holder & I continue to chuck plastics . Even of late in chasing jews , its pretty well all been about fishing placcies.
I'm sure you'll work out what you enjoy more & whether its a numbers game or something else .
Good on you for giving it a go
Chris

Hi Shane, we headed out there on Friday night. Terrific conditions. Found it a bit slow though after a potentially good start. Got a couple of keepers. A mate got a 55cm model, but we had a dolphin decide to fish the exact same spot we were on, and it all shut down as it hang around for an hour and a half, which meant we missed the bite period for that spot. I thought I would see if the bream were in, but nothing yet. Water is still too warm out there. Same here, I have not seen any tailor. Stick to bait mate. Plastics may seem like all glitz and glamor and try to lure you, but it will not last, and will eventually leave you cold, tired and dejected. :)
