I purchased a Tyrnos 30 2 speed and I intend to fish around the North West Shelf and around Tassy (yep a I have Qantas frequent flyers) Do I buy the 15kg rod or the 15-24kg rod. Something like the $100 Shimano Beastmaster will do or something similar in price.

Shimano state three sizes of braid for the reel:

50lb 823 metres
60lb 773 metres
80lb 686 metres

50lb 500m rolls of braid on Ebay seem cheap enough would this do the trick?

I would go a 15-25kg Texalium
and would run 300metres of 50lbs or 80lbs braid with backing not 600m+ on a bare reel.
I also have the Tyrnos 30, try the Talica 16II for something new if you get the chance.

Cheers

What do you mean by a backing. Is there where I wind on a heap of mono first. How much and what size.

This is exactly what to do.

You have to judge how much to put on to fill your spool. Most line comes on when spool is filled correctly and thats when your drag is measured correctly.

If I was you if running 30lb braid run 30lb mono or 50lb braid run 50lb mono.

Tie the two together with a double uniknot but make sure you double the braid first.

I find when putting backing on it is easy to under judge capacity because more line will go on at the top of the spool.

So go over the top and if it turns out to be too much just strip the amount required back off, after braid removal ofcourse.

Have a look at Shimano Triton Sportfishing series 15 - 24kg. I've got a few of these and rate them highly, especially for around $60 a pop.
