Here's the rig I use for Spanish macks etc.

Pics tell the story.

The trebles and live bait hooks seem small, but they have hauled in fish to 40kgs.

Make sure the tag ends on the haywire twists are pushed flat against the wire to prevent bubbles while trolling.

Hook the treble to allow the livie to move freely ( swim ).

The towing hook can be placed sideways through the nose of the livie or in the roof of the mouth going upwards and out the top of the head. Do not pierce brain.

The Treble VMC's are the T8527PS.

Nice Phill,
I especially like the fact you printed out the names of the items then layed them ontop;D, sweet as, good to see some more tips/techniques filtering through

Great how to post Phill. I have gone down to 6" of 27lb wire at times when they are picky but normally 44lb does me.
Are you trolling straight off the rod? We used to run at least one with a torpedo sinker to give it some depth but now I use the downrigger. It gets more than half the strikes

Dale, if you look real close, you'll see the loop in the eye of the hooks etc are double, then I twist 4 -6 up and 4-6 down, sort of depends on how neat they look.

Horse. nope, just off the rod, but that is in CQ where the spanish are not fussy.

Yes, in days gone by we'd use a big bean sinker above the leader to get it down about 2 - 4 meters. I have a down rigger, but somehow the bomb has gone AWOL !!!!!

I have found with the livies, they down to try to swim down anyway, hence the slow as possible speed.

It should be noted that a certain pro mackerel guy in the CQ district uses a downrigger with livies and takes them down to 5 - 10 off the bottom and near ( man made structure ) and slays the spanish there, if he can get past the Cobes :).
