Wouldn't doubt it, not a common catch i'd say but as far as i know they've been caught as far south as the Nerang river..

The odd one in there. Mate caqught a 50ish cm barra castnetting for prawns in Bullock Creek about 10 yrs ago. I scored one about 40cm at Lime Pocket around the same time and one more a few years later from Ningi Creek. Mine were all on lures.
One hit the headlines about 2 yrs ago from near the Bribie Coastguard jetty that was about the 80cm mark.
A few have shown themselves in Caboolture River the past decade too.
You could not target them specifically with any degree of certainty, but are usually a welcome bycatch.

There was 25 years ago so certainly would be today...nothings changed, I don't know how they start their lives some say Barramundi farms from floods/mistakes, I have no idea.

yeah barra farms seem likely source as there is one at bli bli if im not mistaken. either way its good to hear reports of them then, would definatly add abit excitment to the day. it would be good if fisheries put them on a no take list for the pummicestone, it'd be great to see them as a targetable species in yrs down the track.

I caught and tagged/released a 60 ish cm barra in Pacific harbour canals about 3 years ago. They are around thi s neck of the woods, but I think they are usually released pets that were former aquarium fish. Not sure there would be any breeding population locally at this time, though this could change as the waters get warmer.

one of our site members caught a hefty one under the wharfs in the brizzy river last year or the one before that...he is one of the regular plastic bashers that haunt the river at night.....and there's a pic on here to prove it too.

I caught this one around pelican waters earlier this year on a xrap... hooked another much bigger but after a little tail dance had the lure flying back my way...
There are people (i wish it was me) that target and regularly (not every trip but more then just a random one here and there) and catch them upto 80cms in the coomera river............................... Of course it is kept pretty quiet. They can't all be lost pets or overflows from the dams....

I`ve heard of a whole dam full of 100 or more fish over 80cm being washed out of a dam into a river/creek north of Brissy during the last nasty downpour!I`m not too bothered about this introduced species !
Barra that is ! ;D
