Yeh Guys
In the past I have been reluntant to use CP on the guide binds because of the post on various rod building forums suggesting that with the application of CP it forms a barrier over the thread and stops the rod epoxy from soaking through the actual guide bind .
So keen for some of your thoughts on the actual strength on a guide bind with CP applied compared to a guide Bind without CP

Mate most threads now have a colour preserver in them already.

Willo I use CP regularly and recommend its use. Some of the new CP's such as Chromaseal are excellent and really do maintain close to the original colour of the thread. If I don't use CP it is usually only for the top bind of guide wraps (particualarly black or really dark colours) or when I want that transluscent effect. Done properly, there should not be a great deal of difference in strength between the two techniques. I've heard aruements that CP leaves a weaker bind and bond with the rod but I reckon that is just a half assed excuse for weak wraps in the first place! Just depends what final effect you are after. I do not use CP on the overbinds of game rods becasue I want a straight epoxy to epoxy bond between the base coats and the finishing coats. Also the overbinds are usually dark and you want to maintain the highest level of "darkness" you can get. Stuart may want to jump in an comment on this thread.

Best way to alleviate any fears is to wrap two old guides on a bit of old blank. One with & one without.
Then try to rip 'em off.
So many theoretical problems become larger than life in my opinion. Usually by a bunch of guys that never build a rod for anything bigger than a stream trout.
A good CP won't cause an issue.
I know that Doc Ski uses CP on pretty much everything and most of his rods are built for offshore work, so you'd reckon any serious problems would become evident pretty quickly.
Like Mark said, if you want vibrant colours and the blackest blacks, use plain thread & no CP.
If you need to use CP for any reason, do so without a worry.
