can anyone explain to me what the retrieve ratios mean

Retrieval rate is for every turn of the handle you get X amount of turns on the spool, IE 5:1 ratio is for every turn of the handle you get 5 turns of the spool.

yep, and the higher the ratio, the more line you retreive per crank of the handle, all other things being equal (spool size etc)

thanks guys what would a ratio 5:8:1 be then. which one relates to spool/metres. handle turns id guess is one

Yes the 1 is the handle turn and the spool will turn 5.8 times. That's a high retrieve ratio but how much line actually comes onto the spool also depends on how big the spool is. On a big spin reel like a Stella 18000 that will be well over a metre of line per handle turn but on a 2500 size Shimano it will be much less.
