I have caught them at the Harry Atkinson Artificial Reef.
Yup, they are in Moreton Bay. Ya gotta be careful where you stand.

I just got back from Vietnam, where I went to Nha Trangs version of Underwater World. Should have been called piss-weak world. Anyway, they had a Stonefish in a fishtank there, and the guide told us that they ate them, and that they were quite tasty.
I'd have to be pretty bloody hungry before I tucked into one of those ugly buggers!!!
Cheers!

I couldnt imagine eating on off these nasty looking things.
But hey to each there own I had never eaten a Leather jacket for much the same reason (they simply looked odd to me) till someone told me that they were well worth the effort (and they were).
I still wont be running any fillets of a Stoney though!!!!!!

caught 3 or 4 of them at the river mouth over the past few years, all on lures and one on a gold bomber also
very careful de-hooking job lol

Just cut the line playing with one off those things is not worth the price of a hook sinker & swivel.

With all of this intense fresh hugging the coastline in the northern bay, there are dozens of these fish being washed up dead between Beachmere and Sandstone Point every tide. I disposed of 5 i found yesterday at the southern end of Godwin Beach alone in one pass. Hard to spot, but once you get them they aren't too difficult.
Kiddies beware.
