hey
i have looked over youtube a bit for ways to rig gar to swim and skip with various different techniques but i have been unable to find anything on rigging dead slimeys, yakkas, tailor or bonito to swim or skip.
if anyone can help me out or point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated.
thanks

hi mate, put into youtube How to rig a Wolf Herring for Spanish Mackerel fishing!! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t6HG6B7fESQ)You could just use the same method but replase the wolf herring with a gar fish. Hope this helps.

thanks fishinwahbee

ther are a host of different ways to rig swimming and skipping baits but they vary depending on ur target species.....

eg. if ur chasing billfish the simplest rig would be a single hook with chin sinker rigged on mono with the mouth, gills, and gut sown shut with waxed thread and making sure the head is sown onto the body so the fish can't rip it off.

if mackeral is ur target u might use a 2 hook rig on wire or even ganged hooks.

whatever u do make sure the position of the wire or mono is along the centreline of the fish and the hook eye is under the fish's eye. if the bait doesn't swim first time don't despair, pull it out, bend him up and down and side to side to limber him up a bit and u can even use a knife to cut a slot in the baits head to reposition the leader if it's not central.....

there are no hard and fast rules just try different methods, u might come up with a way that works for you that doesn't work for others!

lastly go and join ur nearest game fishing club, the members are usually happy to share info and they often have bait rigging nights to learn and practise the art..

Try and get a hold of a bait rigging DVD by Jared "Dingo" Boshammer filmed by John Haenke. He does all your skip and swim baits gamefish style, wind-ons and a wire mackerel rig.

Not a bad video from Wilson except that they state an incorrect 2 fish per person limit.

One of the best ways to catch big spaniards is by trolling big Wolf Herring under a chin guard like someone else mentioned. Dont be afraid to use large baits as we caught an average sized Spanish (1300mm) on a massive 80cm Wolfie a few trips ago.

The only problem with using baits over lures up here off Cooktown is that your slower troll speed using baits will often see an increased catch ratio of rubbish like Barracuda and Sharks.
