Jim,
I hate to be the bearer of bad news but it sounds like your sounder is going the same as many other Lowrance models of the same vintage. I've had one do it and there's a couple of threads here about it.
The problem is with the power - on/off button. It's a known fault that Lowrance even acknowledge but wont/can't fix.
The sounder starting by itself is the first sign of the problem. The noise is actually the power button staying on or either going on off that it's constant.
I'm afraid it's only the start of the problem - I hope I'm wrong but I reckon I'm right.
I'll try and find the other threads.

Hi Jim
If its still under warranty, get it back to Lowrance sooner rather than later so they can fix/replace it for you. I had the same problem with an Eagle sounder (made by Lowrance) with the same case/button setup. As stated, its a known fault, they can fix it with a new keyboard circuit board.
If its out of warranty......., good luck, chances are that it will get worse and worse until it becomes basically unuseable.

Hi Jim
It was a problem that was specific to that series, the new HDS series has a completely new button design/setup so I doubt very much if the same problem will occur again. I have 2 HDS5's on my new boat, bery pleased with them.
Cheers

I think Bretts right .......Turn themselves on - I had 2 do the same (replaced by Lowrance)
If you get a flashing screen too - its a goner
