Wasn't really sure what to title this tread, but figured this was the best option as I had not (until two ago) seen the dam since the big water rise.
Concept of our visit was to get a feel for the dam and hopefully find some fish over two 1 day trips from Brisbane.
Trip 1
WOW, only 40 feet of boat ramp and you are launched and ready to fish. As we headed up the dam to check out some our previous hot spots, WOW everywhere looks fishy and I mean there are too many great looking locations. We managed to fish up to a dozen areas for a couple of bumps (which could have been anything) and left at dusk bemused, but suprisingly in good spirits as with each location you really could imagine a fish hitting your lure or plastic.
The real question was would we return the following week after a pretty tough and long day at the office. OFCOURSE
Trip 2
With a plan set in our minds after fishing the previous week (we had found 5 or 6 points which had 20-25 feet of water which then came up to 8-10 of water) we set about trying to avoid a second Sunday donut.
Thankfully the first hook up came an hour or so after we started (about 7.30am), although we didn't (I didn't) get it to the boat (lots of drowned timber for fish to wrap you around) the 80-90cm fish hook up was already better than we had had the previous week. What followed was 15 minutes of madness where a solid hit didn't hook up and then a solid hook up found a knot wanting. Our plan was working, but we remained fishless.
Couple more points later and we had a few more bumps, before Nicholas was on and in control (well sort of). A 99cm fish had taken his Berkley hollow belly and was heading into the nearest weed bed. Steady pressure and some fancy work on the electric, eventually saw the the fish nose out of the weed and into the landing net. First fish in the boat at the NEW dam (a PB at that).
Location 1 had provided 4 solid hits for 3 hook ups and 1 fish to the boat (lures were squidgy fish in evil minnow and berkley hollow belly in Gizzard shad), plan A got a tick.
Next location was an untried one, but like many other spots, it looked AWESOME. We threw everything at it, for nothing and were considering plan C when Nicholas was on again. This 103cm fish (second PB for the day) managed to go around the only two pieces of timber that were remotely nearby, but we got the line unwrapped and it made it to the boat. Big smiles for Nicholas (me as well) as the two 2am starts to travel too the dam didn't now seem so bad. The Gizzard shad had another win (I think the Dizzy Garlic sent we pushed inside it didn't hurt either) and we were well and truelly ready for the afternoons fishing.
Story kind of ends there as the afternoon produced a few bumps from unknown sources and we again packed up around dusk feeling that we had somehow taken away at least a little mystery from the NEW dam.
Hope this helps a few people
