The sharks were out last night in the canal just near the boat ramp in the Nerang river.
The Mullet were jumping and i glimpsed a couple of fins. so out i got with the cast net catch a couple of mullet but no luck, anyone got any ideas or have had any luck down the reachers of the river?

Good to know that they're coming back through the local river systems, might go out next weekend and see if I can not just feed the crabs.

Also, it was a leading up to a full moon, maybe that means increased feeding activity or aggressive behaviour? Can anyone prove/disprove that theory?

Cheers,
Kaidon

Houseboat guy, those bull sharks in the Nerang are top fun. Sometimes I'll venture around that spot. And one things for sure you don't have to travel all that far for a hook up. Use Gecko's sugestion of mullet fillet. My method is a nice fillet with a heathy sized tail section cut off. when you've set your hooks in the fillet slice the tail section right up the middle this way one tail becomes two. Your bait should now have a fork tail like apperance.
Try to keep your weight down and let the current flow do the rest. Keep your drag set at about mid way. (just so that you can just peel off line yourself) When you feel the weight on your line lock up your reel and strike...you won't have too hit overly hard because once you've felt the weight and run from your bully the rest is pretty well done. By now your ON so hold on and enjoy the ride. you'll be impressed by how much fight these fish have.(Oh yeah let the drag do it's thing)

Top fun doing this from a 14ft barra canoe just on sunset after a hot and humid day. And hey around these parts you might just tempt a nice jack while your there? The jacks tend to hide not too far from the M1 overpass.

Viper Fish do you float or sink your bait?

Hi ya Maxibon 93
Well if I'm fishing in the Nerang for them I'll put just enough on to hold the bait down, this all depends on the current flow at the time.
On the other hand say in one of the channels at Jacobswell or just out the front of Horizons shores Marina I'd go back to a floating bait. Wait untill the ratchet is slowly ticking over at an even pace keep an eye out at your float has gone way under, Feel that solid weight at the end of your line. And if all three checks are good...., Lock up and strike with a steady up lift of your rod. If all goes well just hold on... these puppy sharks are really good practice for correct drag usage.
Oh, yeah try using a good brand of circle hooks. most of the hook up's should end up at the back end of the jaw....That's most times if your lucky! Pet mice berly helps as well, It's sticky tacky stuff but the fat content is massive which helps the scent trail.
Cheers Gav.

i know you are probably talking about fishing from a boat but are there any areas on the nerang where you could try landbased.

or is it better to choose a bridge where you can walk under to land it?

Ah Maxi try the fishing platform next to the overpass on the M1 you'd still get a run from there too. Most of the time I just let these guy's go. If you are able to take out the hook's great, If your in the position of a possable injury just do the best you can! When these fellas lay still never for one moment think that they're passive. In a second they can swing around and have a go. I usually just place a wet fed bag over them they will go nuts for a second or so, just wait for a while before you start work on them.
Crush the barbs on your hooks it makes the removal job that little bit easier.
