when the boat is stationary the sounder display should be flat 'cause it is only returning what is directly under the boat.... or am I missing something?

Yes, I think Scuttlebutt has it correct, or we need a bit more info, there is some very good Garmin stuff around these days, I am looking at it now for my boat.

Mate - I have the 178C - unlike the Furuno 620 next to it it likes a nice deep transducer placement on my boat to read really well...about an inch below the transom. It is a fantastic GPS (even at its age its a gem - so easy to use and so many features still) and a very solid sounder (but does not compare to the 620). Mate have a good look at the instructions, place the transducer low, and get back to us if you still have problems (in the instructions for eg it will tell you how to specify the water type as salt...).
Cheers

I've got the 178c as well and it works flawlessly in both sounder and gps modes.
I suspect you are wanting to see moving screens when you are stationary, well if there is nothing changing under your boat you will get a flatline full stop.
