I like YGK Ultra Jigman X8 (including the "X8 Light Jigging Special"), but Varivas lines are supposed to be better (and more expensive). Of the cheaper braids, Tuf Line XP is probably the best I've tried.

I'm with all the other Varivas fans, I use "Big One" on my Stellas and Torsas and can't fault it!! Super thin and very smooth for the breaking strain as well!!

No way in the world i would purchase it from a local tackle store though, cost you one of your arms, ebay is the go at around half the local price.

anything over 20lb i just use tuffline or bionic braid both of these have had the best diameter to breaking strain ratio aswell as abraision resistance, though the bionic is a little thicker then the tuff line its also smoother

I agree with the YGK Jig Man x8 but you can also try the x4 Power Hunter version.

Its quite good too and its about a third of the price of the x8 stuff. Japan Tackle usually have it on sale for US$19 for spools of 110yds inter-connected.

Its what got me started off in the first place in using braid. I settled on it after trying several other brands. Very reliable, long lasting & good for tying knots.

YGK Power Hunter was also the first multi-coloured braid I used, and I think it's just as smooth and durable as YGK's Ultra lines (Ultra Jigman, Castman, Light Jigging Special etc), but it's nowhere near as thin for it's breaking strain. Even so, it's still as thin as Tuf Line XP, and much cheaper than YGK Ultra.

As a comparison, the PE4 Power Hunter has a stated breaking strain of 44lb, whereas the PE4 Ultra Jigman has a stated breaking strain of 62lb (for the same diameter).

If you're not too worried about using the thinnest possible braid, I'd definitely recommend YGK Power Hunter. The Japan Tackle site says it is an 8 strand braid, but I can't confirm that without cutting a rigged line on one of my reels :) . I have tried YGK X4 Light Jigging SP , and it was very tightly woven, not smooth, and made quite a lot of noise coming through the guides under pressure. I have wondered whether rough braids make much noise under water, in the current, like high tension steel cables do in a strong wind.

Here's a link to the line-testing page on Paulus's site, for anyone who's interested.

i sgree with Brent. You won't know the "real" breaking strain unless you check Paulu's site. I have sent him various brands of braid including fins & suffix for testing. Most of them broke between 50-70% of the stated value. He also found that some were actually up to 10% larger than stated diameter. Bottom line is that i check his site prior to purchase,He also sells woodstock power strike braid which is very affordable and quite fine dia/breaking strain. The tests are on his site.
Cheers,
Peter

Dean,

In the 20lb at least, that super-cheap Dolphin PE braid is very nearly the same diameter and actual breaking strain as Tuf Line XP!

You'd have to try it out to see if it's just as durable, though. Some braids fray and lose strength quickly.
