Im off to hit some impoundment Barra soon at monduran and was wondering what proven diving lures suspend in the water column, I have a few divers, poppers and sp's ready but I would like to play around with some techniques this time and any help would be great.
Thanks craig

Look for Suspender Spots, self adhesive small lead weights that you can add to the keel line of your floating lure to give suspending or sinking characteristics. I use them regularly when in the tropical rivers targetting jacks and salmon.

Look up some on NAGGs posts in the freshwater section mate.
There are a couple of upgrades for Xraps that are excellent.

Hi Craig

I actually cant think of any off the shelf barra lures that suspend ... :(

Mostly we toy around with our lures - upgrading the trebles & splits as a priority and then see what the outcome is.

One of our favorites is the Rapala XR12 / SXR12 - Remove the tow point split , Replace the rear treble with a #4 owner STN66 & the front with a #1 ...... this usually works and is a well proven barra lure
For a deeper diving option - a Stiffy diver upsized to the next larger owner STN66 on the front and back...... plus a little sticky weight under the bib

Other lures that can be toyed with are the B52s , Ecogear twitch baits & Smiths Saurinas ....... usually the appropriate sized owner trebble & larger splits will do the job.

smith saruna are great suspending lures, i use the 125mm at mondy and put 75lb decoy split rings and size 2 owner st 66's makes them suspend perfectly

Craig.
Definately have a look at suspending the XR12s like Chris said. I have had good success at suspending floating model Yo-Zuris of late. I generaly play around with 1 ring, 2 rings, larger or smaller rings or a combination of both, or larger smaller hooks (4's on front, 1's on back).
I even suspended a gold bomber with a bit lead (small sinker flattened and glued under and just behind the bib.
Just wish the kitchen sink was a bit deeper hey (been eying off the laundry sink, but the Mrs reckons I am wasting water ::) ).
Now all I have to do is have some success actually catching a Barra. ::)
Next week, I can feel it in my bones hey, or is that the flu coming on :-?

Chris, just noticed I have had the hooks the wrong way round???

Smaller hook on the bum so the lure doesn't sit bum down on the pause -

been playing with some lucky craft 128 pointers - very difficult to upgrade as they are already finely tuned ....... so dropping the belly hook and using the lighter 3X Owner ST-56BC (#4s & 2s) - but work
Now as these run at about 3ft rather than 6ft for a X Rap (12) these should be good to fish over the emerging weed beds at Mondy & Awoonga:P

For off the shelf suspending lures the best ones I've used are the TILSAN BIG BARRA. They are made of timber and don't have rattles inside so they can also be good to use if the fish are a bit 'spooked'.

They come in a variety of patterns. The few that have worked best for me have been the Green Mackerel (No 1 by far) and the Mango & Jaffa patterns.

You might need to upgrade the trebles and if you get any big hits the points where the trebles connect to the lure sometimes bend but are easy to get straight again.

I had a green mackerel Tilsan Big Barra once (of several I've owned) that was absolutely riddled in toothmarks from Black Bass. And in one particular session I landed a dozen solid barra in about half an hour. Very first cast with it the following morning, in the same spot = 104cm barra.
