Should be able to get one for around 400 bucks or less. I just got a beauty built by a local bloke up here. Cracking job and it was pretty fancy too I might add. The blank was a Samurai fully carbon so top quality gear.

not willing to spend 400 though is it possible to get a good one made for my purpose under $300?or would it be better to just bye one off a shelf?

Well you work it out.
Go to a site that sells blanks, guides etc.
Add up the price of all the bits and pieces plus some araldite, epoxy, metho, acetone, thread etc etc.
Then add on what you are paid at YOUR job an hour and figure a minimum 4 hours work.
$400 is bloody cheap for a good custom rod.

So yes, if that is too much get a factory unit and be happy.

A custom live bait stick for under $300 - I doubt you will be able to do it unless you built it yourself.

To be honest it would cost you a lot more to build it yourself due to the parts you would need to get for a once off and would take you ten times longer. It would ba labour of love!!

The Shimano T curve rang and Daiwa Catlaina range of rods are in the ball park of what you could get off the shelf. On special they would fit under 300 bucks.

It would be entirely dependent on the brands and quality of the gear being used.
I have a very good 15-24kg live bait rod built on a SnyderGlas JS1029W blank and used Fuji graphite reel seat, and Fuji BSVLG guides and a silicone carbide tip. It is not light but stacks up well for live-baiting. In the 15 yrs I have been using this rod rock-hopping I have damaged one guide. The glass is covered in scratches and marks from use and abuse rock hopping but it still performs well. Casts very well too surprisingly. All up that rod cost me about 180-200 bucks 15 yrs ago. If you can find the same blank again I would recommend it highly.

When i built the rod i tested it against a set of scales for my maximum dead-lift to see how it would go.....58lbs dead-lift was as much as I could possibly load onto the line through the rod. In my books that's well in excess of the 24kg line fishing pressure you could hope to apply during fishing.
