Went for a bush walk at Airlie beach the other day and spotted these tailing near the shore.
I thought they were mullet at the time, but I couldn't really see in the glare.
Just looked at the photos and I don't know. Stripes maybe like a mack??

Dunno mate, hard to tell with that pic. How big were they? and how far out (water depth?). My best guess would either be Milk fish or Permit on the flats

They would have been 30, maybe 40cm max. About 20ft off shore in maybe 4-5 feet of water.
The three of the stuck together for quite a while. Pushed up a fair bow wave at times.

very hard to tell, i'm guessing, maybe 'cuda's, because of the stripes
then again could be mack's

I'd agree with killitfillet, looks a lot like a diamond scale mullet, especially with the shape of the closest ones head

Yep definitely Diamond Scale Mullet for mine - can see the scale pattern and the black fins and yellow tail pretty clearly.

definitely diamond scale mullet, its quite common to see 2 or 3 of them swimming like that very close to shore in that area

I reckon they're deep sea racing mullet you can distinguish them by their racing stripes down their sides :P

Is it just me or is there a much bigger predator on the far left of the photo in line with the three diamondscales???? Looks like it has stripes like a wahoo or cuda. Dunno, might just be the reflection from the photo.

Def another on the left of pic. Prolly another mullet? If not I'd go squid/cuttle.
