I'm upgrading / replacing some of my older beach gear and am looking for some suggestions.
I'm looking for a 6000 size, 3-5 bearing reel in the $100-$150 range. The Shimano elf doesn't do it for me, the shimano seido is just on the expensive side. I have a Penn spinfisher 950 that i use outside that i tried on my beach rod with little success on the weekend (spool is too deep and line is 50lb braid, overkill). I was thinking of maybe a Penn Slammer 460? Anyone used these on the beach? Any other suggestions? i want to run 30lb braid on it and will be mainly for tailor.

I think I may be thinking along the same lines as pommy but I would be looking for an alvey combo. Second hand you should piss it in for $150. Don't need braid for Surf mate.

Are you baitfishing or throwing metals for your Tailor. I use an old Shimano TSS4 with braid for spinning but go back to my Alveys when soaking baits

I'm with horse, keep an Alvey for bait fishing as it'll be better for longer distance with a good Tailor rod. The baitcast will be excellent for lures/slugs for the surf. Saw heaps of guys try to baitfish with b/c reels last week on Fraser and to me the biggest NO would be the fact when many of them, would let the reel end of the rod fall into the waves when re-baiting.:o At least with a side-cast reel you'd be safe from too much sand damage.
Fishmtb, some of thew guys who were on the trip had new Alveys with either the geared system or the rapid retrieve handles.

I use shimano spheros 6000FA's on the beach with 30lb fins for tossing slugs geat setup i got them from US online stores clearance they were cheap (might find some if you search) you can pick up FB's for just over $150 landed the 8000 is good too holds a little more line which can be handy if you can cast well.
i use the 14000 spheros for tossing baits.

Why not? it's worked for the last 3 years with my overhead while my mates have fished with braid on egg beaters.

each to there own. I don't like using alveys (i've got one gathering dust) and i prefer braid in the surf as the waves don't bother it as much and the bites are more distinct.
Have a go with braid for a few weeks and then go back to mono. I did just that when i took my old egg beater spooled with mono instead of my overhead spooled with braid and was disappointed with the trip.

either. I usually use bait and take a couple of metals

This is closer to what I'm interested in.
I looked at a couple 6000 sized shimano today and decided they was too small for the reel. I tried a socorro 10000 which is in my price range and felt shedloads better than the penn slammer 560/760 i tried.
anyone had any bad reports on these? I think I'll end up with the 10000 Socorro and a big ass spool of 30lb fins. if only power braid came in 1200 yd spools.

I just spoke witha mate who uses a baitrunner off the beach. I shied away from them as I didn't want a reel with any type of rear drag as it would be around saltwater/sand. Has anyone else used them off the beach?

Tried it myself but found that the hook pulled too many times on the bite/strike as there is no stretch or give in the line. May have been due to my overenthusiasm but I don't have this problem with mono.
Too many patches of rock where I fish that snag or damage the braid.
Much more contact time and control of the bait with an Alvey.
I mainly fish lures off the rocks, but even then spray has killed most of my $150 eggbeaters inside 2 years.

I have noticed no difference in the number of hooks pulling using braid and lures the biggest factor for me was switching to single hooks over trebles, the benefits are huge increases in casting distance and you can feel the nudges when retrieving lures which means you can alter retrieve instantly to induce hookup less effect of wind and wave respool less often. I didnt believe the benefits till I switched and thought braid was a way to get more money out of fisherman not a better way to fish.

hi If you can spend abit extra and get yourself a daiwa emblem pro 5500 probably the best value for money beach reel round $269. don't believe the bullshit alvey lovers tell you about alveys you will outcast them with bait or lures two spools so you dont have to buy anther reel awsome drags.alveys are reliable I agree. but its easy to catch fish when there hiting anything that hits the water 30m away. Ive owned alveys years ago and never again.Ive now owned the daiwa for nearly 5 years and 90% of my fishing is surfand ive only had to change one bail arm roller 3weeks ago.It has literally caught tonnes of fish. you can also take it on boat fishing too.If you buy an alvey you might aswell buy your self an old EH holden there's nothing wrong with them.

Hey mate i dont have a problem wit spin reels on beachs i mainly use 700e alveys but i do also use daiwa sealine bull and my old 20 000 stella. Both these reels i have used off the beach for over 5 years and have not failed but they never get salt water in them and i also clean well. I use my spin reels when the larger tailor over the 3kg bracket are around as when they charge the white wash u can wind the slack line and stay connected to these fish better.
But as mentioned above the braid is great for spinning and yes is ok for bait fishing for choppers but when chasing the bigger greenbaks u will miss alot more as they hit completely dif and thrash out of the water alot more..
Anyways thats just my opion and i only chase green baks.
Good luck man and good fishing..
