The large amount of freshwater pouring into the catchment during the week has again turned on the fishing at our local impoundment Lake Burrendong. Good reports have come flooding in from anglers far and wide who visited the dam over the weekend to try and turn a winter scale.
David Aries of Wellington produced a great report and photo of a solid Murray Cod that he caught and released in Burrendongs main basin. The fish was in excellent condition and proved that Burrendong still houses some impressive Murray Cod. Mark Rich also caught a big 3.8KG Yellowbelly on a prawn.
Scott and Brodie Watkinson, Dallas Ridley, Matt Craft, Grant McConnell and I all fished Burrendong over the weekend, and found that the fish were on the bite within a matter of minuets of the day’s fishing commencing! Dallas Ridley managed a good sized Yellowbelly of around 45cm casting a small crank bait on the point just past the boat ramp, and got the days fishing off to a terrific start. In the main basin of the dam, we found the Redfin aggressively taking lures in a variety of colours and styles, with Silent Jackal Crank baits and River to Sea crank baits in the Redfin imitation working extremely well. Slow rolling the lures from shallow to deep, and introducing a slight pause worked particularly well on the cast.
Grant McConnell enjoyed his first days fishing on Lake Burrendong after recently moving to the district, and had an encounter with an un stoppable fish that will certainly have him re visiting the impoundment again! Fishing a small lightly weighted Yabby not far from the main basin, Grant hooked a fish that peeled drag in a long 5 second run before displaying some fierce head shakes which saw it break free. Grant reported that the fish showed all the signs of a good size Murray Cod.
The large amount of water that has flowed into Burrendong has dirtied the river arms, in particular the Macquarie, as the water colour has turned to a caramel brown around 100 metres up from the main basin. The Cudgegong arm is not quite as dirty, with good under water visibility well up the river arm, which is making lure fishing in this arm much easier then in the Macquarie.
