when i read your post i thought about a couple of spools i have with oxidation on them so i did a google search. plenty of answers there. i am going to pull the drag out of them an boil them in cream of tartare and see how it goes. seem to work with pots and pans so why not spools ?
Never thought of that one deepfried sounds like masterchef for reels ;D let us know how it goes, i will google more info as well thanks.

After each outing, i spray the reel, especially the spool and line with water and wipe thouroughly. When dry i spray the reel including spool and line with innox and store in reel bag or sock. This seems to keep the reel reasonably clean on going.
If the build up is salt, then it is easy by soaking the whole spool in warm soapy water. If it is corrosion, same again but take line off and then polish spool with brasso or some alloy mag polish to take any dags off. If it is a threadline, obviously the drag needs to be dismantled first.
Hope this helps.

no it isn't. have been using it for 6 yrs now with no -ve results either in catching fish or line longevity.
