All, can anyone tell me where in brisbane i can get fresh bulk mullet fillets (bait quaility). I talked to morgans at scarby today, they have bulk 5kg boxes for $3 per kilo but frozen. I want fresh so i can salt them pre freezing when i get them home.
Anyone know where i can get them fresh? Chasing the pro's up and down the beach not really an option since i live in toowoomba.

the seafood place opposite paisly drive intersection on gympie rd. just call and order and they will tell you when they have it. They always get hold of the fresh when it is available, although i found it best to buy the whole fish fresh and fillet myself to save the frames for crab bait...

Hi Guys
I purchased 20kg of fresh fillets at $4.99kg from Lucs Seafood, 101 Riverside Place Morningside on Monday. Phone 38998611. Excellent quality and about 6 fillets to the kg. They came in 2 styro foam boxes and the service was great.
I salted them down and froze them for when required. I live in Ipswich and the drive was about 40minutes. Pity I didn't know before hand I could have ordered more. Morningside is closer tham Northside also.

I can go one better than that.
Mate, you can get whole mullet at $2.50 a kg, fresh not frozen from Markwell Fisheries at Chinderah, they have a factory that processes all the states fish.
Nice drive down but you need to call a day or two in advance. I would not go there just for mullet unless you had other reason to be there at the time.
Raptis buys their mullet from Gold Coast Prawn Hatchery at this time of year.
How do I know that you ask? Yeah, management told me as I was after a few.
All the mullet was bagged and sold off to Raptis, Raptis gets more money for the roe than the flesh. Bulk of the roe is sold overseas to middle east countries.

I tell you what I never want to fillet that many mullet again in my lifetime. Took 3 of us 5 hours to fillet a dead set box trailer full of mullet::) :-? 8-)
No proing for me personally, just when foxy has his license on board. :)
Cheers

Hey Mick
I just put the fillets into large zip lock bags and filled the freezers.;D
It won't take long to chew through them all. I used 80 fillets just last trip for an over nighter and I have a 2 week Fraser trip in sept so this the main reason I got so much.
Cheers,
Greg

Always an idea to ask for "Buck" mullet (male Mullet) these are cheaper as they don't have the roe that the female fish are sought after for. The male fish actually have a smaller gut cavity so meaning more flesh as well.
After filleting hundreds and hundreds of mullet the other day we only came across 2 female mullet out of the whole lot. Some poor person sits there squeezing every mullet to determine the sex. I believe a milky liquid squeezed out is a male fish. Glad i dont have that job lol
When you buy "Barrels" you are buying female fish that have been gutted (for the roe) and heads taken other use. Usually the qaulity isn't the best as its been handled a lot and coped a fair amount of abuse. At the end of the day it's bait and will still catch fish though. Just depends how picky you are.
