Ok so today after a few weeks, well more like a month i thoght i'd start the old merc blue band 70, pumped some fuel into it cranked it over for prob ten seconds and it fires up sweet as no dramas. BUT... no water comin out the tell tale, i let it run for prob 30 seconds maybe a bit more coz it usually takes about that long for the water to come out, alas this time no water just steam, obviously because no water was gettin in through the motor, i'm thinking that it needs and impelor kit but just thought i'd get other peoples ideas first...what do you guys reckon.

The Mercs of your size and vintage don't have heads as such as they are dead end cylinders. They are just the powerhead and a crank case cover. If you switched it off before she spat the chewy i reckon you will be alright. As mentioned above i would be grabbing a whole w/pump kit and not just impeller.Be sure to check thoroughly though the old impeller when you remove it and make sure it is still intact and no bits missing that have been sucked up and create a blockage.

And a dob of nickel anti seize on the shaft spline and threads when putting back together.
