I've just picked up a couple of Kokoda Tournament Gold Series Sprog Shallow Runners at $7.95ea. I think they look remarkably similar to to Ecogear SX40Fs. Has anyone else used these lures? How have they performed? Are they a copy of the Ecogear?
Ross
awful is how they performed.
They are a copy of the ecogear for sure but only on the outside and not near as well made. The weight system in the Sprog is just rattles in a hollow lure so they tumble on cast rather than flying relatively straight. One of mine would float and the other would sink slowly, tried adjusting balance with good hooks and rings but again they were not quite right, probably spent more effort than they are worth, even @ 2 for $10. I tried and tried to tune them to run straight but just couldn't get mine to work properly....so they make good key rings now.
If you're looking for cheaper alternatives to the SX40 then have a look at the Strikepro and the River 2 sea range of lures. They both are well made, and come with quality hooks and rings out of the box. You may still need to tune the odd one but never more than a tweak on the tow point to run straight.
Cheers, Roo.

Go to BigW and buy the ET brand (its Kokoda repackaged). $4 and has caught me trevs, tailors, flatties and breams.
If you're worried, just change the trebles but they seem fine to me.

Couldn't agree more Rod - The Ecogears are just miles ahead - Yes Kokodas are Copies ....... bad ones:(
If someone is unwilling to pay the premium for an Ecogear ...... I would go Atomic Hardz first , Cultiva , Daiwa TD Shiners , River to sea (save 25-50%) ...... They all have a good finish and usually swim well - the Strike pros are often a hit or miss
I really do believe that if you are going to put the effort into lurecasting - you should be using lures that swim the best & work the best - I've seen it time and time again ......... someone throwing a lure like a kokoda , smilin jack etc - and catching nothing :( you give them a better quality lure & they start catching fish.

A bit of a hint from someone who has a lot of exerience dealing with thier product.....anything with the Kokoda brand is a copy of something...usually a dodgy one. Ya get what you pay for.
That said, I have recently added another Kokoda to the box.....a big(90mm) rattling vibe bait that I've fitted some better hardware to and will see if it can tempt any deep dwelling Barra next trip. I'm pretty sure the kokoda wont survive if I do manage to get a solid enquiry but atleast only a minor investment was made to see if its a useful method of targeting cranky chrome slabs. I'm tempted to drill a hole in it and squirt a bit of supa glue in to silence the rattles but they are only small plastic ones so I'll leave it as is for now as I have a large profile Blade bait to test the silent theory on. I couldn't bring myself to drop Jackalls and M'bass down into the snaggy depths of Monduran so I suppose this is where the cheapies are handy when your trailing different techniques...just so long as I can tune it properly.

the sprog is utter shite, however kokoda g-vibe in most of the colours has been a blinder for me on alot of species, yellowbelly bass bream flathead squire trevors jacks.
also kokoda "the bat" in lime green w/ black stripes is killer on surface bass.
