the jewfish are back in my waters and i've been doing my searching in loads of forums with great help but would still like some tips from the experts
is there any certain rig for using live bait for jewies and would it be smart to hunt for tailor first and get a few of those and then chuck them out for bait?

A jew will eat just about anything that is live at a pinch. If all you can get is a legal bream, then i'd use that. But at this time of year i'd be hunting tailor on slugs or mullet with a castnet. Two hooks snooded together on 60lb, 60cm- 80cm of trace to a swivel then a running sinker should see you right. Keep the hooks to the size of your bait, small strong hooks will stop a big fish but oversize hooks will kill your livie.
Fresh bait is the next best thing to live. Try to avoid frozen if you can to give yourself the best shot.

Depending on the area you are fishing, try suspending a live bait under a foam float with a little amount of lead to keep the bait in the strike zone. I liked this style around bridges and a lot of structure so you can see where the live bait is.

where abouts in caloundra are you fishing? ( pelican waters im presuming ). the mullet are going nuts in currimundai lake at the moment might be a good spot to get some livies. I havnt caught any pike since they replaced gemani jetty.

I caught my first jew in the river behind kawana industrial maybe try there also?

Last week we had four lines out, 2 hook sneld rigs, live pike (30cm+), live mullet(25cm) and 2 fresh whole large squid.

The pike got the 1st run and dropped. Then the squid went off, 22kg fish landed.

2 days later, 1/2 a dead pike, live herring (which were in the area everywhere), live trevally (35cm) and fresh large whole squid.

The 1/2 pike got the 1st run and dropped. And the squid went off, 20.5kg fish landed.

Just letting you know what happened on our trip, not saying what bait is best or worst. I've only fished for them a handle full of times.

cheers
