electric motor testing out side of water

Is it safe to trial how long the electric motor battery lasts with it running out of the water?. is there any heating issues etc

Dont know about the heating issues, maybe. However there will be less resistance on the prop and you will get an inaccuriate result. Also, you never really run an electric at a constant speed or for a solid block of time. If you really want to test it, I'd suggest take it out and use it for a full day and see how it goes. You could run it in a garbage bin if you want, with a bit of splashing.

I take it you dont have a battery system on your outboard. Another option is a dual battery system for it like on a 4wd. Then you'll never have a problem.

I spoke to the BLA service mng a while ago and he said it is a big no no to run your leccy out of the water ....... even for a short period

yeah realised being no load on the motor would last ALOT longer then in the water but was just curious.

im waiting to purchase a proper battery was going to pick up one last weekend but had to replace my car battery as it dosnt hold charge for more then a week and i ride the pushy to work so when ever i go to take the boat out the car is dead :( . so thought i would try the old car battery see how long it lasted. ill just take it out this weekend anyway and test it seems easier .

They rely on water for cooling the motor.
It's just like running your transducer out of water.
It may not do anything if your lucky....but it might too.
Personally I would not chance it.

And as mentioned it will give a false indication as there is no load on the motor.
It'll be like revving your car at 3,000rpm in the driveway for 4 hours to see what your economy on a 4 hour city drive will be.

Best way to test is too launch the boat and see.
Just remember to take the outboard though so you can get back to the ramp :)

I think thats you're best option mate, give it a real test.
Plus, from what NAGG says, sounds best to keep it in the water.
Plus Plus, you cant catch fish if your boat aint wet :P

haha yeah true i forgot about the transducer too. i had it running for like 15 minutes so hopefully nothing is harmed.... i kinda thought about it went ugh better check and turned it off.

I've been thinking about this a bit.
The main issue is not probably heat in the motor but heat in the seals to keep the water out of the motor.
Those suckers (unless they're a ceramic disc seal) chew out really quickly if un-lubed by water so Chris is 100% correct.
A big no no even for a short period of time.
