Having recently stepped out of the dark ages and learnt to tie a BT (wasn't hard and I don't know why it took me this long), I now have a question as to when to tie them and when not. I understand that they are predominately use for light braid, but when is the braid too heavy. I fish 4lb, 8lb, 12lb, 30lb, 50lb and 65lb gear. Which of these is it most appropriate to?

Thanks Steve

All of them.
Pretty much all braid needs a double to tie a leader to. I tie a Yucatan knot for the leader to the double and I'm away.

Tie it in all lines, I still Bimini my heaviest GT popping braid of 130lb to catspaw on to 100lb twisted leaders

If those weight are all Braid tie it in all of them, then from the double you will want to use a loop to loop conection in your heavy gear. To get rid of the knot going through the guides on the rod.

I've only recently learned to do them well, and I will use them quite a lot now. I am enjoying using doubles.

It can be a bit hard constructing one on a rocking boat in bad light but I usually start with Bimini's I tie at home and the then resort to a Spider Hitch while I am at sea. And then use an Albright to the leader.

Gday,
Out of interest, how many twists are regualr bimini twisters using in braid?

I go for 25 in mono up to 130lb, and around 40 in braid.

I am a big fan of the bimini, super easy to tie and I have never had one fail.

Cheers,
Myles

I prefer the plait to the bimini although they are both 100% knots. I find that with game fishing mono the plait will run through the guides easier

Yeah the plaits do run nicely through the guides as they are generally quite long in the knot, but I don't see any difference when using a full roller rod.
And there is no way in hell I could tie a plait I would trust when rolling around in a metre and a half of slop. Bimini no probs though.
